I teach Game Dev in a public school in San Francisco, I use Godot with my students and as many Open Source tools as possible

I know that one, it's based on Godot 3 though, I wonder how much has changed for a visual novel

#godottips #godot I'd like to find a video to help them get their project off the ground and in the right direction. We primarily use text based tutorials but I think they need more support you can get from videos

He sounds like he supports what Luigi Mangione did then

Someone will summon Luigi

I'll try to remember to join in, sounds like a good chat, I haven't gotten hooked on this app yet and weeks can go by without opening it, I teach Game Design in a CTE Pathway in a San Francisco public school

I just started playing Helldivers to stay in touch with a friend who moved away far, it's his choice not mine, and I'm like I don't understand all the things I'm supposed to press, if it weren't for him I'd stop instantly, too complex of controls

I used to edit the Mintcast podcast about Linux Mint, I live in SF, I don't know if you ever did anything with the interview
comment in response to post
You interviewed me a few years ago perhaps you remember

Is this for something you are writing or researching?

Active user of discord, I teach Game Design in a public high school and it puts me in touch with game developers and game companies for collaborations with my students, Capstone project mentoring, play test opportunities, advice, career options, etc indispensable ATM, although blocked at school

Canva is fine for saving time making something more complex than you could otherwise make, especially posters etc for the classroom but for some tasks students really still need to learn a whole process about how to create something from scratch
comment in response to post
Sorry Canva, not Canvas
comment in response to post
That is an interesting arrangement, what engine do you use and what curriculum
comment in response to post
Hmmm, maybe not if your thoughtful feedback allowed them to improve it

Game Tester used to be a job title although many games companies have moved to Discord and invitations to test and iterate on their games

But I do see so many teachers, esp HS, make a group project out of something that should be individually done so you can know who knows what, and students tell me they are tired of that approach
comment in response to post
But I'm not assessing does EACH group member have mastery of ALL the material, bc I know they don't, they present what they did and how they did it, what they learn and what they'd do with more time
comment in response to post
Group projects can be good if they mimic what you'd do in an industry or job setting, I teach Game Design and I want all my students to work on a team and bring an original game idea to playable prototype, the work is just like when they work in the games industry so it prepares them

Perfect idea to let #NotebookLM make an AI inspired game, maybe you shoot every 3rd AI hype cycle
comment in response to post
Yes, I teach Game Design 1 to juniors and Game Design 2 to seniors, I have 4 sections total and the seniors work on a team second semester to make their own game then present it, it's pretty great, except my class sizes

Hey Karly it's Owen, been a super long time, I'm still a teacher over in SF, I'll try to make some of these chats soon, I need the connection

They operate locally in my area too

I'm actually on medical leave until semester 2, January 6th, we can chat in the near future

Yeah, the media narrative is so easily provable as wrong just by going outside, SF is still fantastic, and I'm a public school teacher, didn't win the lottery, and I own my place here, dare to dream, it's possible

I just started playing and I love it, it's making me consider what I do in my classroom to inspire my followers, otherwise known as my students, the little things matter, when you are working them to death
comment in response to post
I also REALLY need teachers interacting about teaching, I don't want your book, podcast, AI hype, class, maybe in the future I will but let's not let 🔵 sky become like that other hype filled self promotion site

Basically I want them to include me in their group, and I give a weekly grade for what each group member is doing in the spring when they actually build a game together, it just has to allow me to see into multiple groups and what they are doing
comment in response to post
I had some of my high school game Dev students use it last year, they liked it, I kept some on Trello for project management but some used Code Decks , well see in the spring this year
comment in response to post
Excellent, I didn't know you could do that, helpful for me for moving here, but avoiding all the DOOM! of Twitter, just staying in teaching and game dev lanes

I'm on medical leave for awhile longer but when I go back, probably in January, back to the excitement, if you have any need for blog post ideas about students, I might have some ideas then

GDC 2024 we met at the Godot booth, y'all invited me and some of my high school students to present our games made in Godot on the Thursday of GDC and we met at the GitHub Open Source party during GDC this past year as well

Every game idea I get starts with one of her quirks

My dog begins licking my face around 5am to get me to walk her, my goal is not walking before 6am, hers is walking IMMEDIATELY, she usually wins
