"Haiti: Acknowledging a French injustice." "President Macron has made a significant gesture by publicly admitting that forcing Haiti to pay an exorbitant indemnity to recognize its independence had subjected it to the 'unjust force of history.'" Good read. No paywall. www.lemonde.fr/en/opinion/a...

In a few hours we launch a brand new series @empirepoduk.bsky.social VICTORIAN NARCOS- THE STORY OF THE OPIUM WARS

Apparently some Americans are avoiding traveling to Canada because they fear they will not be welcome. If you are one of the loud mouth MAGA crowd, it’s likely best you stay away. If you are one of the sane ones, just put a “FUCK TRUMP” sign in your car window when you cross the border. Open arms!

A fascinating end to this illuminating mini-series. While many of the events of the Troubles are hazy in my memory, like the Brighton bombing and the hunger strikes, I remember exactly where I was on April 19, 1998, when the Good Friday agreement was announced, the day before my 22nd birthday.

I say this to PhD students a lot. Not even from a training perspective -- although it's good advice! -- but because I've often repurposed material I've reluctantly cut from one article to begin another, or found a conference paper from five years ago and used it as the basis of a lecture, etc etc.

Want to see the scope of what the NEH grant terminations is? The ACH ( @ach.bsky.social ) has compiled a database: impact.ach.org

Absolutely incredible: the Feds totally folded on Congestion Pricing, thanks to the MTA just...refusing to abide by their demands www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news...

The discourse around tariffs has been “things will get more expensive” but I am here to tell you that I am knee deep in reporting on this subject and I strongly suspect that if super high tariffs endure, it will shift to *certain items cease to be available at any price*

Excited to see Florida's economy tank.

If you got an NEH grant cancelled, log it here.

YOUNG ADULT: - Begins to drink wine from a plastic cup - Can smoke a cigarette, but does so like a French film noir actor - Babbles nervously about self to others at parties

this is a 1990s post-Soviet headline

List of countries not subjected to tariffs: Russia Belarus North Korea Cuba They apparently took the time to impose tariffs on several uninhabited islands, so the omissions are extra noteworthy. If you spot others please flag!

Narrator: "It did not make them rich."

Not only did the president of Tufts University provide an excellent and strong declaration in support of a motion filed by Rümeysa Öztürk’s legal team in federal court. He providing an illuminating timeline of events around when she was seized by ICE. Sunil Kumar's declaration is worth reading!

I told ChatGPT that I wanted to be a philosopher as a kid. And then it said that I was a DEI hire?!?!!?? God, we are fucked.

if nothing else credit to cory booker for the longest speech a stanford guy has ever given without announcing a product that will doom us all

Katia stepped down as Bloggers Karamazov after 10 years and has written this post summarizing the amazingly diverse individual posts and series that have appeared on the North American Dostoevsky Society's blog during the last 10 years.

A new #DigitalDostoevsky blog post is up! @fyodor76.bsky.social discusses the choices we made doing data cleaning for our network graphs work. Check it out! digitaldostoevsky.com/2025/03/31/r...

A blogpost I wrote on the network analysis project @katiabowers.bsky.social and I are working on for our Digital Dostoevsky project digitaldostoevsky.com/2025/03/31/r...

The contained rage here is incredible. You have to think, hope, this is going to rise across America.

A fascinating interview.

The worst thing the federal government has done to unions in my lifetime happened last night. The second worst thing was three weeks ago. The labor movement will either protect ourselves right now or be smashed. That's all there is to it. www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/they-are-g...

Small thing to do for your visa/green-card grads rn. Make sure they collect the numbers of several *trusted* senior faculty and family/friends. Then teach them how to set up an action button that texts everyone at once with one button/Siri. Share location enabled. www.google.com/search?clien...

Today: a particularly productive co-writing session finishing some small things and a chapter sent off to its editors! 🎉 @fyodor76.bsky.social is the best co-author ❤️

I do think it would be more productive to admit we are in an authoritarian state right now, and that courts are fighting that, and that we need to fight that.

This reminds me of the Abu Ghraib photos. But the Rolex makes her even trashier than Lyndie England....

Make this go viral! Her husband’s life was put at risk by the Signal texts.
