The crowd recognized it, responded by cheering, and he acknowledged that in return. It isn't some sneaky thing a few elites are caught up in, dogwhistling to the fringes. It is the base of their movement. Because they're Nazis. Sincere, unambiguous fans of Hitler and everything that goes with that.

when the crowd cheers for the Nazi salute, what you have is a crowd full of Nazis

Democrats can’t sustain this kind of rhetoric without action. At the federal level they need to hold a 24-7 vigil at the Capitol until the coup ends. At the state level they could seize federal assets until court orders are being followed. We’re already outside the regular constitutional order.

Lotta stuff you can urge federal Democrats to do right now that’s effective and useful, but the scale and impact of the constitutional crisis is so severe that they should be abusing parliamentary procedure to hold the floor in the House and the Senate until the coup ends. Waiting is dangerous.

SCOOP: The top US election security watchdog has frozen all of its efforts to aid states in securing elections. The move represents the first major example of the country’s cyber defense agency accommodating Trump’s false claims of election fraud and online censorship.

it's just painfully obvious that nobody with any influence or power in the left of center is even thinking about what comes next. mitigate the damage? start planning a robust program to rebuild the government? nope, just midterm positioning, inflation, and begging for donations already

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

This isn't a normal detention center at Gitmo just for the grotesque optics of that location. They're disappearing people. No disclosure of who's there, or how many, or any way for lawyers to find out. And no transparency on any deaths in custody there, either. Consider the implications of that.

But shall this crazed old man be tamely suffered to drag a whole ship’s company down to doom with him?

this is very clear and very straightforward about what's happening and at some point we also have to start pointing the finger at major news organizations who are flatly - out of bias, out of fear, out of incompetence, whatever - refusing to treat this as the emergency it is do your jobs

The function of the New York Times is to normalize Trump to readers that Fox News can't reach.

In 2016 the NYT ran multiple front page stories page about the grave national security risk of Hillary Clinton's server. Today's front page, and nary a mention of the successful "plutocratic coup" (said by a sitting House member) or "constitutional crisis (said by a sitting Senator) unfolding

the dems are not gonna save us, and just like last time, we are gonna have to force them to even help. only we can save us. i believe we will and when we do, it’s time to replace those fucking losers

No time like tomorrow to confront an emergency crisis happening yesterday

once again, I expected it to be bad but I didn’t expect it to be this bad this fast it’s not even that they’re bothsides-ing his actions, they are literally not telling us what’s happening somehow the Times has reached a brand new level of comprehensive failure

im sorry but if you’re looking at everything that’s happened in the last 2 weeks and lined up for the next few months and are thinking about the midterms, you are not a serious person imo. there is a constitutional crisis *right now* and multiple humanitarian crises on tap! wake the fuck up

I don’t think that’s very clear at all. Trump and his Nazi billionaire friend are trying to destroy government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Anyone still on their side doesn’t want to work with you ever again. And the people who are on your side want you to stand in their way.

The job of congress isn't to come on here and tell us stuff, that's the media's job. Your job is to tell us what you're going to DO about it.

Trump is openly violating the law on a vast and unprecedented scale and everyone is acting like it's normal. NPR had a long story about finding a rare shrew. NYT said he was disregarding "legal niceties." This is an attack on the Constitution as profound as the attempt to overturn the 2020 election.

The Framers foresaw this problem and figured legislators' ambition, self-preservation, and self-respect would drive them to act against a tyrant. The Framers didn't expect a majority of Congress would be cowards and fools who cheered it like pigs celebrating the arrival of the butcher.

Please kill me

what Musk is doing is as close to the government being taken over by a hostile foreign power in our lifetimes, the coverage should reflect that

okay so what legal authority does elon musk have to commandeer the office of personnel management and access reams of sensitive data? www.reuters.com/world/us/mus...

This is the worst angle of Elon's sieg heil I've seen. Look at all the grotesque laughter and glee in the background. Utterly sickening.

what is their fault, though, is actively pushing aside the people who are optimized for the Attention Age (*coughAOCcough*) it’s their job to recognize that this is a weakness of theirs and work to address it because the rest of us are paying the price

What he's announcing is a concentration camp. A deeply illegal, unconstitutional, anti-human rights atrocity. Anyone who supports this is complicit. Anyone in any federal service, military or otherwise, is morally obligated to refuse to carry out any orders related to this deeply criminal act.

We say that people don't notice constitutional regime collapse because it comes on too slowly but I'm not sure how much faster it could be happening; we are literally at concentration camps on day 9.

well i will be the millionth person to note that this is the first of what im sure he hopes are many concentration camps and that conditions at such a camp will be terrible, it will not be limited to undocumented migrants, and people will die there

Imagine what a competent opposition party could do with this stuff

I knew it was going to be incredibly bad and it’s still - somehow - even worse than I thought

this is severe, untreatable, terminal lawyer brain. so many legal academics act like the constitution is not a vessel intended to secure actual human rights and dignity, but a mere matter of intellectual curiosity, meant to be batted around like a cat with a toy

Just got the livestream link! If anyone is interested, I'm giving a speech tonight about Martin Luther King, the role of law and legal interpretation in confronting or cementing white supremacy, and the continuing fight for multiracial democracy youtube.com/live/1c0Nm1Z...

one reason i am pessimistic about what's coming with trump: i've spent the last 2 years watching the political media use propaganda to cover up or apologize for us-funded ethnic cleansing, and i'm not convinced a domestic ethnic cleansing will be covered differently than gaza has been

A Uniquely American Public Health Crisis ▪️ 2 dead, 6 injured. ▪️ Shooter: 15 years old. ▪️ 911 call made by a second grader. Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children & adolescents in U.S. This is not normal. It is not acceptable. We owe our children more than thoughts and prayers.

Schoolkids traumatized by lockdown drills and those who survived actual school shootings were then urged to "tough it out, school shootings are just a thing that happens."
