Another way to put this: Musk and his twerps have exposed us to pandemics, broken science, stolen all your data, endangered the U.S. payments system, threatened air traffic control, and cut off HIV medication to 20m people in order to save ::checks notes:: 2/10th of a percent of the federal budget.

See my latest in the LSE Business Review. An alternative title: The Consent of the Automated, riffing off the consent of the governed, and highlighting that we all get a little automated when we interact with machines blogs.lse.ac.uk/businessrevi...

Are there any relevant publications that come to mind? @asociologist.bsky.social Thanks in advance!

๐ŸงตWho is opposing the Trump administration? I analysed 76 actions of the administration since inauguration and then searched for *meaningful* opposition to each. I grouped the types of opposition and considered what we can learn from both them & actions where opposition has been lacking 1/24

with gil won-okโ€™s passing, there are only seven living โ€œcomfort womenโ€ left, survivors of imperial japanโ€™s system of sexual slavery

And our findings seem to remain relevant today, as seen in recent events like the "Yoon supporter in Captain America costume who attempted to storm the Chinese embassy." biz.chosun.com/en/en-societ...

Thanks, @socioinquiry.bsky.social! One takeaway from it that I want to highlight is that we found some evidence that Trumpism normalized Sinophobic expressions against Chinese Americans among some Korean natives in Korea. Looking forward to seeing more work on transnationalization of hatred.

Qualitative researchers and methodologists, whatโ€™s your favorite book for teaching or introducing the importance of (alternative) casing in qualitative studies, especially as recent standards emphasize theorizing findings? I voted for Krause's Model Cases, but it may feel too abstract for some.

#ProblemSolvingSoc event on Feb 21!๐ŸŽ™๏ธ "How Dialogue Becomes an Idea and Then a Bill: Problem-Solving Around Housing Decommodification in the US" ๐Ÿ‘ค With Gianpaolo Baiocchi & H. Jacob Carlson ๐Ÿ“… Feb 21, 2025 | โฐ 3โ€“4 PM (ET) sites.google.com/view/problem...

James Ferguson, a guiding light in the anthropology of southern Africa, has died. His prose and analysis offered a model of clarity and insight. He was only 65. Very very sad.

This is a useful (but day-ruining) post on the current situation (itโ€™s a self-coup), including a list of likely outcomes (civil war is possible, but unlikely). Also, @liberalcurrents.com is clear-eyed and becoming part of my daily reading rotation. www.liberalcurrents.com/is-it-a-coup/

Tuesday next week! Not sure the subtitle points to the most promising area to find disagreement among the panelists, but in any case, excited for this discussion with @brettchristophers.bsky.social, @danielagabor.bsky.social & @jonathanhopkin.bsky.social. In person (first come, first serve) & online

Theory-driven historical research, which my dissertation is about, often feels like spending several weeks searching only to find null results.

The Caring University is now available for pre-order! It's about structural and cultural change to improve the higher ed workplace. See the ToC โฌ‡๏ธ I'd be grateful if you would consider reposting to your networks to spread the word. tinyurl.com/6kk9fryt

We have an open position for an Associate Professor in Sociology working in the field of quantitative inequality and stratification research at Roskilde University, Denmark. Please share or apply! tinyurl.com/2u4mx2ve

Sociologists: when prepping to submit to ASR, do you follow journal instructions and put the tables in the back, or do you listen to all the reviewers complaining on social media and embed the tables in the text? Asking for a friend. (A little comic relief from DC events.)

That's a wrap on page proofs for My Tax Dollars! It is now in the capable hands of @princetonupress.bsky.social, and will be out on TAX DAY (well played, PUP ๐Ÿ˜‰) Register here for a note when its available for pre-order: lnkd.in/eSa-qUKc. And let me know if you'd like me to come talk about the book!

My Korean Eonni (Sister) at the protests had it right. "Alliance to destroy Elon Musk's testicles with a spinning kick" (via Yejin Gim).

๐Ÿ“… Mark your calendars for CBSM mini conference in Chicago, August 7-8th. Submission deadline March 14. "The Many Impacts of Social Movements: Fifty Years after William Gamsonโ€™s The Strategy of Social Protest" For details: www.asanet.org/collective-b...

Lead story in @nytimes.com tonight speaks to one small way protests help shape national discussion: photos. Without protest, how would a news org visualize this debate? Treasury, computers, DOGE? Many feature Musk smiling. Here we see the drama of public opposition, which also helps justify story.

A very clear statement of what is happening to science right now. And on the social science side: "This cuts across economics, psychology, sociology. In all these fields, there are whole chunks of the discipline that may just not be possible to carry on anymore."

Part of what's so scary about the Trump admin's threats to ignore judicial orders is that the courts lack the ability to effectively sanction agencies for disobeying the law. If you haven't read Parrillo (2018) on governmental disobedience as the "endgame of administrative law," now's the time.

Bluesky needs a bookmark function.

I'm blushing. "To older readers, the book will evoke memories of 1970s classics in industrial relations and industrial sociology like Working for Ford, Strike at Pilkingtonโ€™s and Grunwick. ... Like its predecessors, this book deserves to become a classic."

A mind-boggling fact: Identical twin correlations in schooling are nearly identical in egalitarian Sweden and the less-egalitarian U.S.โ€”around 75%! That means three-quarters of schooling differences can be traced back to family background ๐Ÿคฏ #sociology Tab. 2: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Chuffed that my paper on social norms and bad beliefs has been published in Synthese. You can check it out here: link.springer.com/article/10.1... (1/3)

Musk is closely following the Curtis Yarvin playbook. If you don't know who Curtis Yarvin is yet, you should.

If you missed today's talk, you can watch it here. Together, @epopppp.bsky.social and @abenewman.bsky.social provided a framework for thinking about the current moment, and it's risks to our financial system and our democracy. And listen to the Q&A for more talk about risks and possible next steps.

The NYT asked me to write an op-ed on Musk and the Treasury and then took a pass. I hope it will still get read.

๐ŸšจBREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

I made an infographic for my recently published article in Qualitative Sociology PDF: drive.google.com/file/d/10mjO... My students each term make infographics to share knowledge, and so here I am also learning to make infographics ... thanks to @unm.edu for the Adobe creative cloud sub!!
