I once almost drowned on a school trip to a wave pool. I remember just being trapped below the surface, far too exhausted to thrash or even swim. A tiny old German lady spotted me, dragged me out and yelled at me while I lay there & choked. Likely she saved my life and I never even said danke schön

CLARIFICATION : The Trevor Project's hotline will still be live. But basically this means LGBTQ people can no longer be connected to it through the US national 988 suicide prevention hotline. They will need to be contacted DIRECTLY So spread this around They can be texted. They can be called.

A very good point re: “move fast and break stuff”

when you’re so racist you don’t let your workers have a day off for a holiday recognizing the end of slavery

When Teddy Roosevelt was called disloyal for criticizing Wilson’s conduct of WWI, he said “to announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

I wrote about how the 2020 protests hurt Trump politically. I also wrote about how counternarratives about left-wing violence are just spin — and wildly at odds with the reality of extremist violence. Gift link: wapo.st/3SOEv6e

This whole thread is dense food for thought but this point in particular struck me as interesting

It's pretty notable that mainstream, establishment discourse never ever ever considers giving liberal politicians credit for crime reductions. It's almost axiomatic that if crime goes down under a center-left leader it's either unremarked upon, or must be driven by something else.

Lack of charitable perspective is a really ironic antisocial trait of a lot of people exhibit on social media. (I screenshotted rather than quoted because the comment inspired my thought but I’m not trying to dunk on anyone and I don’t want it to come off that way)

Parades without drag queens or other colorful flamboyant displays? No thank you.

Generosity.

Saw someone call that “parade” the You’re Fyred Festival and I can’t stop laughing.

one of the really challenging asymmetries in american politics is that democrats are asked to answer for the actions of every single hypothetical democratic voter in the country but republican lawmakers are not even asked about the behavior of their own elected peers

Not enough zoomers remember or learn how bad Bush was

It is really really sinking in for me the degree to which LLMs are the ultimate expression of right wing anti-intellectualism. Its proponents are literally mocking the idea that anyone would ever want to learn anything, know anything, develop any actual skill, or have a thought of their own.
