The Atlantic Ocean floor.

The Milky Way formed by eating smaller galaxies (a process that is still continuing). The Gaia data has created detailed records of stellar motions that helps to track the remnant stars from some of these objects.

Got my Canadian election ballot in the mail and was about to vote, as we have since they allowed all expat Canadians to do so but we immediately noticed something odd about the list of candidates for the riding where we last lived on the elections.ca website. Most of the candidates are missing!

Alexis Quintana kindly sent me the OB star catalog from this paper: ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2025MNRA... and I converted it into this star density map poster. Although the very high star density regions are similar to my previous maps, the overall density distribution is a little different.

Well written article. Typically titles are not chosen by the writers so it might be an editor who added the "The best space telescope you never heard of" bit. I'm curious though. Is it really true that Gaia is less known than other space telescopes like Spitzer or Chandra ... (1/2)

As a Canadian, I'm biased, but I had always believed that the main advantage that the United States had in the 20th century was that Europe had attempted to commit suicide. Twice. Plus of course China was in a period of long decline.

Looking forward to a high-resolution view of Tr 14 with JWST pre-imaging.

The team at ESA mission control has initiated Gaia's final manoeuvre. The spacecraft is now moving away from the second Lagrange point to prevent it interfering with any current or future missions near this scientifically valuable point in space.

Our Gaia mission is going to be switched off tomorrow, 27 March. The spacecraft might be going into retirement, but the science continues with two major data releases in preparation for 2026 and 2030. 🔭 🧪

Always enjoy our @futuremeetings.bsky.social adventures into #VR - especially the beautiful worlds of @walkaboutminigolf.bsky.social! By far the biggest advantage of #immersive tech that we've found in #TFOM is the ability to be *together* with others, whether for social or work!

Although the spacecraft is going to sleep, the mission will continue for years to come. It will take at least until 2030 to process all the data.

Now that my basic Star Central world is live in Horizon Worlds, I am looking at adding a game. Players will travel between the nearest stars within 10 parsecs (33 light-years) searching for artifacts from an ancient galactic civilization.

Last night we were over at the Leiden University board game society demoing the Acrux star board game. This is the latest near final prototype with the box and folding board. The rules are solidifying now but the students suggested one interesting variation we are going to try out.
