just found out the NEI advisory council meeting that would've reviewed my grant yesterday got cancelled despite being in the federal register 🙃 videocast.nih.gov/watch=55443 www.federalregister.gov/documents/20...

effectiveness aside, it seems like adoption of these new "AI co-scientist" tools will just be used to further justify cutting science funding? (and instead funnel it to tech oligarchy) research.google/blog/acceler...

this is what my brain sounds like btw www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4D8...

apparently David Hubel said something to the effect of: if you need statistical tests, you haven't found the right thing. the effect should be obvious. maybe purposefully provocative, but still...

can someone help me understand what the actual goal is in these NIH cuts? sure you have the partisan bullshit of defunding the "leftist agenda" that is universities, apparently. but the administration knows the real implications, even if most trump supporters don't. is it just pure authoritarianism?

It's not surprising I guess, but still so incredible to me that the very basic concept of university education is accepted as leftist agenda, esp given all the ivy League people in the administration

THIS IS SO CUTE they're friends 🥹 from pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9592109/

things feel very sinister right now and also it's raining in berkeley so this is the vibe open.spotify.com/playlist/4K6... send me sinister music

getting older is all about understanding why people in senior positions are bad at responding to emails

maybe it is time to leave substack (below by substack ceo) if you lack critical thinking skills and want to make money, i kinda get why you'd support "freedom of speech" in its current politicized form. but to shamelessly kiss up to (resisting using a different verb here) elon and zuck is pathetic

did not have a konrad trump impression on my 2025 bingo card but here we are, this administration truly bringing us new surprises every day

open the schools!!! 😭

i've always been confused about mainstream ai fearmongering (ai takes control and rules the world etc.), bc what Ali describes in this thread (and on his blog) seems like a much more immediate (and indeed already occurring) problem. and it seems to be the goal of SV + new admin to push it forward.

ai slop found in a train exhibit in taiwan :(

new franz ferdinand is so franz ferdinand-y that i'm getting teenage angst flashbacks www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0gQ...

the taiwan railway logo is so cool. it's the combination of 台 (台灣 = taiwan) and 工 (work), which also resembles the cross section of a railroad track. and it also resembles the traditional style seen in the circular version of "寿" (longevity), shown here on a 土地公 (guardian deity of a place)

Lmao and didn't they just get caught censoring LGBTQ content www.usermag.co/p/instagram-... 🤡🤡🤡

oh i am reading this book ASAP and the main point of mechler & ringach 2002 was this, which people have seemed to largely ignore!

what are your favorite examples of good roasts (comedy or social media, not cooking)?

Ending the year with the last post of Neural Computation. A sprint through special topics and a reflection on the semester. Happy new year! 🥳 www.dissonances.blog/p/wrapping-u...

Hyperdimensional computing, inspired by cognition, is a framework where the primitives are high-dimensional vectors. It sits somewhere between symbolic and connectionist AI. Some basic examples: www.dissonances.blog/p/computing-...
