Whatever happened to Speed Reading?

"I foster appreciation for local biodiversity through direct wildlife engagement"

"weekend" comes from an 1860s misspelling of "weakened" as in "i'm weakened and going to take a nap." not many people know this

Don’t forget your spot at the next ICOR meeting on 27th February focused on new paradigms in research communication. Speakers and perspectives from @gallseeker.bsky.social, @madubs.bsky.social, @katiecorker.bsky.social, Veronique Kiermer and Geoffrey Boulton. incentivizingopen.org/2025/02/the-...

Great to see new search tools appearing. No need to be constrained by native PubMed and Google Scholar. We _want_ people to create search tools for alternative ways to find bioRxiv/medRxiv papers 😊

Post-doc opportunity in neurogenetics. Wellcome funded, to investigate molecular switch between brain plasticity and degeneration. In beautiful University of Birmingham campus, lively city, UK. Drosophila, behaviour, imaging. International lab. Application deadline 19 March. #Drosophila #post-doc

Wait, what? Cancelled USDA contract: "Hawaii conference room rental for 100-person USDA Meeting on Biodiversity: $11,000" Because it has "diversity" in the title? www.michiganfarmnews.com/ag-secretary...

Egg white protein (ovalbumin) produced in transgenic potatoes. Stored in tubers, straightforward to harvest and extract. Scalable. rdcu.be/d9XLg

Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office 😭 It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. I’ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.

Incompetence in Washington puts every American at risk, no matter how you voted. No one should be happy that the DOGE team - the same folks who randomly published classified U.S. security information online today - wants access to your bank account & Social Security numbers.

Even worse incompetence: they accidentally fired, then apparently today un-fired, hundreds of the people who manage America's nuclear weapons.

The inimitable, formidable James Heaters has gifted us (some of) the contents of his brain in the form of a primer on evaluating rigor in research articles. And he published it using @curvenote.com so it's versionable and its code is executable - the only way it makes sense to publish in 2025. 👏👏👏

Meet a #StowersGrad predoc!

Here’s my post on the NIH indirect costs slash-and-burn. God, these people are exhausting:

Letter from the SSE/SSB/ASN councils on the scientific understanding of sex and gender, pls RT

🚨 BREAKING: Illinois Governor JB Pritzker says he’s going to rename Lake Michigan to “Lake Illinois.” EPIC TRUMP TROLL!!! 🤣

Scientists and lovers of 🧪: @sfn.org has a great tool to help you engage with your local representatives and make your voice heard on *questionable* decisions in DC. 🇺🇸✉️ It is quick, impactful (we hope), and customizable — edit the text, make it your own! #floodthemailbox www.sfn.org/Advocacy/Adv...

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Dear All, I believe that this thread will become one of my most important contributions to the fly field (I hope I will make other contributions)! Here, I introduce the Soy Milk Machine Fly Food Method, a.k.a., DeepCook!#Drosophila#NewPI

Shocking: a pioneer in quantitative developmental biology passed... one of my all-time heroes! He had a dominant influence on many in the early 2000s when this field started to take off. What a loss! Obituary written by two of his former students: biologicalsciences.uchicago.edu/news/john-re...

The Institute mourns the loss of R. Scott Hawley, PhD. A brilliant scientist, cherished colleague, and true mentor. Scott's contributions to our understanding of genetics and passion for training the next generation of scientists will forever be remembered. bit.ly/3WPqqYG

Do you know Daisy Roulland-Dussoix? She is one of the discoverers of restriction enzymes, who’s findings paved the way for the development of recombinant DNA and cloning technologies. Accordingly, the finding was rewarded with a #NobelPrize. But the prize didn’t go to her. 🧵👇

As the EOs and orders keep coming, I keep thinking of the exhibit in the Berlin Jewish Museum that displays the 962 anti-Jewish laws and policies in order as they came down. These kinds of drumbeats are designed not just to oppress but to normalize oppression. www.jmberlin.de/en/jmb-journ...

When I think about how hard it is to do science at all, how much thought and care and effort goes into doing an experiment just right, I can't imagine adding the stress of not knowing whether you will be able to pay your rent.

I am one of the impacted NSF postdoc research fellows. My funds remain frozen. I rely on these funds as my salary and payment to aid in my research efforts. I am currently without the funds I use to pay my bills, health insurance, etc. and to move my research forward. #NSF #postdoc

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

Imagine if a cyberattack did this. It would be an act of war.

Does anyone know of a search engine which searches all preprint archives, and only preprint archives (i.e., not Google Scholar)? In @europepmc.bsky.social I find @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social and EcoEvoRxiv , but not arXiv-Qbio.

Following along with Alie’s suggestions, does anyone know any entomologists fluent in Swahili that might know if there is a word for “gall wasp” (Cynipidae) to name a new genus collected in Kenya’s Vuria Forest?

Europe made a colossal mistake: They banned genetically modified organisms (GMOs) while the rest of the world embraced them. Now we rely on imports, pay more for food, and miss out on sustainable agriculture. Here’s the story of Europe’s GMO debacle 🧵:

Excellent perspective by @lisamjarvis.bsky.social @bloomberg.com on the deep freeze at NIH

Heard from inside the National Cancer Institute, part of NIH — travel through April is canceled. Purchasing with government card is frozen. All public comms are off limits. Can’t even submit abstracts to future meetings. Can’t submit *manuscripts* for publication. All hiring activity frozen. Fuck.
