Can freer immigration undermine democracy by fueling populist backlash? It's one of the defining questions of our time, long overlooked by advocates. Check out this new exchange between @zsoltkapelner.bsky.social, myself, and other scholars on the issue: migrationpolicycentre.eu/the-ethics-o...

I haven't followed the discussion under your post, but secret ballots on no-confidence votes certainly exist, e.g., in Germany (not in the constitution but parliament's standing orders). In South Africa, High Court had to rule that this is allowed before they could finally get rid of Zuma (I think).

Do you know this paper? @grattonecon.bsky.social @jacobedenhofer.bsky.social journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1...

Some thoughts on institutional reform in the UK, spurred by the upcoming Australian elections. Australia has traditionally been classified, with Britain other former colonies, as a "Westminster democracy" - characterised by a majoritarian system and fusion of legislative and executive powers. 🧵

Excellent defense of the UK constitution. But the dichotomy of presidential & parliamentary systems is unhelpful. The no-confidence procedure can be combined with branch-based separation of powers. This would have made a difference, e.g., in Hungary. When it comes to constitutions: USA < GBR < AUS

The point of no return:Only days left to stop a totalitarian state in the US

Nice to see that Bangladesh seems to be considering semi-parliamentary reforms to make democracy more resilient to autocratization. @tarunkhaitan.bsky.social @laderafrutal.bsky.social verfassungsblog.de/reforming-th...

Great thread, as always. But like many discussions, it does not distinguish between (1) executive and legislative power and (2) AfD party and its voters. What's the core problem for the CDU/CSU? It is the median party in parliament, but cannot capitalize on this position due to the Brandmauer+

So. I wrote a dissertation on how economic crises can lead to the breakdown of authoritarian regimes. Here are three key point to keep in mind as you watch the news this week 🧵

If one person can do this without pretty immediate political consequences, there is no way you have a robust democratic constitution. Which also means that political scientists and constitutional theorists have been lying to themselves for a long time.

Good thread! One more way in which much of this shitshow is a consequences of the presidential form of government.

Great resource!

I don't think enough people really appreciate what's happening here. The United States has gone from being a key ally to threatening the territorial integrity of multiple NATO members. Both Canada and Denmark must seriously consider the possibility of an American invasion

Über Handlungsfähigkeit und Effektivität zu reden, ist weder falsch, noch undemokratisch. Sie werden notwendig sein, um die Demokratie zu verteidigen.
