Opinion | Whether it's the president of the United States flagrantly lying about dead people cashing Social Security checks or Oberlin undergraduates overstating the cultural appropriation of dining hall banh mi, both sides are betraying fair-minded centrists like myself.

old Soviet joke for our times: Guy stops by the newsstand every day, scans the front page, doesn’t buy the paper. One day the vendor asks what he’s up to. Guy says: “looking for an obituary.” Vendor says “those are towards the back of the paper, comrade.” Guy says: “not the one I’m looking for.”

Whatever you think about Ukraine and Russia, you have to admit that Zelensky's refusal to fellate Trump and Vance on tv was a major diplomatic failure.

What better war to celebrate birthday boy #BenHecht than to buy my book, "Ben Hecht's Theatre of Jewish Protest," about his little known oevure of WWII-era Jewish political theatre! You can check out the first two chapters free via any Ebook "sample" offer.

Wow. Airline industry must be thrilled about this very reassuring and public announcement about current safety standards...

The National Jewish Book Award winning author of HOW TO FIGHT ANTISEMITISM is now DEFENDING NAZI SALUTES I FUCKING CANNOT

So true. How much of the Trump takeover of Washington is fueled by a combination of bribery, blackmail, and death threats?

I forget the actual wording but there was a great tweet about how the Democrats are like a band that just spends all of every show telling the crowd to calm down.

Part of me just wants Kennedy Center Awards and Mark Twain Prize to dissolve now. Shut down. Quit while they're ahead, you know. So the new regime can't coopt them for their cronies. Yes, they'll just make new awards but fine, make them.

In Sinclair Lewis's "It Can't Happen Here," (1935) the fascist who got elected President of the United States writes in his autobiography about his realization, early in life, that being an obnoxious dunce got him far more attention than being a smart and decent person.

finally some good news

"Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin, arguably the two most unorthodox and influential world leaders of the 20th century..."

National Symphony Orchestra is "in residence" at Kennedy Center, but from what I can see it's certainly not owned/governed by them. Good to see individuals resigning, but would be wonderful to see the whole orchestra decamp. Easier said than done, obv. But if some brave funders could step up... 1/2

Given developments at the Kennedy Center, effective today I am resigning as artistic advisor to the NSO. Not for me. It’s been a wonderful 8 years working with Kennedy Center President Deb Rutter, fellow artistic advisor Renee Fleming, NSO artistic administrator Justin Ellis, and the entire NSO

I'm sure this is in part a cost saving measure for Brown/Trinity. But absolutely a bold and necessary stance for at least some MFA programs to take in these times. Hopefully will make applicants think hard about why they want the degree, as opposed to practicing their craft in less expensive ways.

Did you know that Ben Hecht wrote a series of plays in the 40s showing the character of Tevye as a victim of the Holocaust? You can read about this dark Sholem-Aleichem fan fiction in my new book from @rutgersupress.bsky.social Use code RUP30 for 30% discount! t.ly/mAQkK

I'm proud to announce the publication of "Ben Hecht's Theatre of Jewish Protest" from @rutgersupress.bsky.social, available now. A critical study of Hecht's four dramatic works from the 1940s about the Holocaust and the struggle for a Jewish state, as those events were happening. 1/5

The now underappreciated Arthur Kennedy was basically Arthur Miller's male muse in his early great plays. He played Chris in All My Sons AND Biff in Salesman AND John Proctor. All within 6 Broadway seasons (1947-53). What a great run for an actor!

In order to have a diversity of opinions at the big newspaper I own, we are very excited to announce that along with our tradition of publishing bad opinions by huge morons we will also be adding even worse opinions by evil idiots

I voted for Trump. When he said he wanted to deport undocumented workers, I didn't know he meant people like my gardener.

Fun fact - Elisha Cook, Jr was the original lead in O'Neill's "Ah Wilderness" on Broadway in 1933. Puts a darker spin on that character if you know it.

Annual Christmas reminder that the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah is not about the Nativity. It's about the Rapture. Enjoy!

The true meaning of Christmas, Hanakahh, and all Winter Solstice holidays!

I first learned this was a thing when I read about George S. Kaufman's days as a critic. One show he saw was so bad, he tapped the shoulder of the woman sitting in front of him and said, "Pardon me, madam, but would you mind putting ON your hat?"
