Me: “You can find me on Pinteresque” Them: “you mean Pinterest?” Me: … Them: … Me: … Them: … Me: …no

We could have eliminated child poverty over the past 100 years but instead we eliminated the one amazingly beneficial thing that all children, rich or poor, had daily access to: outdoor play and freedom.

In 1996, Utrecht NL transformed a 6-lane car street thru the heart of the city into a car-free street that easily carries 40k people on bikes a day plus a LOT of public transit riders — far more people now than ever moved on it in cars. And with so much less pollution/emissions, noise & public cost.

Fox News reported that JD Vance had to move to an “undisclosed location” due to protests at the Vermont resort where he’s skiing this weekend. For inflicting misery on the world and here at home in America, this is exactly the energy that should greet Vance wherever he goes for the rest of his days.

Am going to wait til I am home to enjoy a Solero. Will mean I technically do 29 days, as I ate my last one at midday on 31st Jan. If that's not incentive to donate, what do you want from me justgiving.com/page/nolero

A guy who used to be a comedian & is good at improv and dealing with hecklers and who has also spent the last 3 years in a war zone turns out to be a guy you can’t out-alpha, imagine that

Hell of a good thread.

Research: Protected bike lanes result in approximate doubling of number of users in a network link. Roughly twice as many women as men become new users of a link when protected infrastructure is installed. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Developments in which sense prevails. It’s an unaccustomed feeling right now

UKGOV has today approved £200 million on a couple of new roads (in yellow in pic) added to an already hideous Norwich junction; a junction that clearly generated traffic. The new roads will also generate traffic so more roads will be added here. Rinse, repeat. Lunacy. www.gov.uk/government/n...

A certain publicly disgraced male comic has just announced a bunch of international tour dates and you know what you can do? Buy tickets to see absolutely loads of women instead 😇

In the Netherlands rural cycleways run across the country, connecting villages, towns and cities and allowing families to safely cycle together through the countryside

Saw an article about Louis CK tour Was reminded to plug this excellent novel by @jnraeside.bsky.social

Heck yeah

Whoop! @snappedankles.bsky.social 🌲

“To use a technical term, it blew my mind,” said Vancouver’s former chief planner Brent Toderian…”They weren’t lazy about it—they didn’t just throw up barriers and ban cars. It might be the best bargain I’ve ever heard,” Toderian said. #Montreal

Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

England lost 28% of local bus provision* per person between 2011 and 2023. This isn't new. But it still shocks me and has significant economic, social and environment consequences. * Measured as number of miles travelled by buses that are operated by commercial and local authority operators.

Snipped from the official response to my MP raising concerns about the AI bill. “The status quo cannot continue and addressing it is an urgent priority for the DCMS.” The status quo? As in: copyright. As in: you can’t steal my shit to train your plagiarism engine? Reckon that status quo is fine.

The government's AI consultation is deliberately overlong and jargon-heavy to discourage responses. You don't have to answer every question! ALCS has a guide to the important questions and how to interpret them, which means you can fill it out in about ten minutes: www.alcs.co.uk/news/your-ri...

I’m one of 1,000+ artists who are jointly releasing this album today to protest the UK government’s planned changes to copyright law, which would hand the life’s work of the UK's musicians to #AI companies for free. Don’t legalise music theft! #IsThisWhatWeWant? isthiswhatwewant.com

The tech companies want this amendment to copyright because they’ve already stolen everything and want retrospective immunity, right? Exemption from the rules cos information wants to be free and all that BS. Have written to my MP and, again, explained the idea of “property”.

This infrastructure creates prosperity. The average car costs $12,544 annually—fuel, insurance, maintenance, depreciation, financing, and parking—most of which leaves the community. For every 15,000 vehicles a city reduces its rate of ownership, $127 million remains in the local economy each year.

Why does 25% AfD among young men spark a thousand "what is going on with young men?" posts yet Die Linke 34% among young women generates...nothing at all? Yes, young men voting for the radical right is an important phenomenon. But so is young women going rad left *at even higher rates*.

A brilliant article on how promoting road schemes (dualling, extensions, bypasses) appear as logical technical solutions but sustainable transport schemes are framed as political choices. open.substack.com/pub/omerbor/...

I’m a passionate supporter of @artsemergency.bsky.social - they do the work that we all know needs doing. Whilst others talk, they take action. If there is anyway you can support them, please do.

A Woonerf in the Netherlands. Through motor traffic is redirected to main roads. Greenery & street furniture (including a small playground) is strategically placed to ensure motor traffic keeps to slow speeds, with paving used & roadway raised at junctions, where collisions are most likely to occur

I've uploaded it to the American Fietser YouTube channel if you'd like to view it or share it there. 🙂

Please can everyone listen to Geek Gods: Sir Ian Livingstone at 4pm and midnight please? Tell everyone about it too. Radio 4 Extra : BBC Sounds thereafter.

The change with bike in Paris is so big that a English speaking YouTube channel about Paris for tourists, and not for bike advocacy, made a video about it. These images are an excerpt of the beginning - I cut his words about the drivers to be short ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAPx-VE_q2E

This is welcome news 🚍 Children and young people we work with as part of our #powerofthevoice research project tell us that the cost of transport restricted opportunities. This is one step in the right direction in tackling #childpoverty

If you work in the creative industries, please give feedback on this government public consultation on AI and our copyright. ALCS provides help here with answering the questions, and you don’t have to answer every question to submit it. The consultation ends SOON, Feb 25th:

So many people in the Netherlands cycle to to the supermarket, therefore supermarkets design for cyclists. Here, a seamless bike route leads directly to the supermarket entrance cycle parking - no dodging cars, no awkward detours.

I will never top this

the way.
