RIP Cauldron. You were a useful tool. bitergia.com/saying-goodb...

In case you missed it earlier this month, we’ve welcomed six maintainers to the first cohort of the Sovereign Tech Fellowship: Jan Kowalleck, Sarah Hoffmann, @hugovk.dev, @mklu.bsky.social, Stefan Eissing, & Denis Ovsienko. 1/2

Our internet has been out all day because we’re having some drainage work done and they had to disconnect it to dig a gigantic hole in our front yard. I’ve spent all day remembering just how many things rely on the internet to work now: some of our lights, music, thermostat, beat saber, doorbell …

Manager: "What's this milestone 'Living on a prayer' ?" Me: "That's the documentation deliverable." Manager: "What's the status of that?" Me: "We're halfway there" Manager: "Why is progress so slow?" Me: "You fired Tommy" Manager: "So?" Me: "Tommy used to work on the docs"

Yesterday, I spent the day at CERN (squee!). The open source folks at CERN invited me to give a presentation, which was loads of fun. indico.cern.ch/event/150867... I also got to visit the LHC, which is only open for tours during a short maintenance window.

I like to think of this category of sculptures as “activities where you might consider wearing clothes”. Art amuses me 🤣

@zdnet.bsky.social met the forkers at State of Open Con and talks about the potential of forking to manage licence shift and how this may impact future of open source software. https://buff.ly/40EwJiA

Enjoying a cocktail using my newly designed from scratch in Blender and 3D printed cocktail stick toppers! They are beach themed, which is why the penguin is lounging in an inner tube (it also might be because feet are harder to make) 🤣🍸🍹

I’m learning a lot about 3D print design using Blender. Left: take those warnings about thin faces seriously. Middle: even when blender doesn’t warn you, the faces might still be too thin, so look very closely at your slicer. Right: Finally, success!!! 🎉

Celebrating global open source leaders, @geekygirldawn.bsky.social of @chaossproj.bsky.social, OpenUK shared blue plaques with them to recognise their achievement and contribution to open source at State of Open Con 25. Learn more about each of the 20 recipients at https://buff.ly/4hTL6H3 #soocon25

I’ve been learning Blender, which is way harder, but will eventually allow me to design more interesting things for 3D printing than Autodesk Fusion. I am ridiculously pleased that I designed from scratch and printed 2 toppers for our new metal cocktail sticks!

I can’t hear Don’t Fear the Reaper without thinking of the SNL more cow bell skit with Will Farrell and Christopher Walken.

We don’t go out for Valentine’s Day - everyone is eating out, so we usually avoid the crowds. We made delicious homemade pizza, and Paul bought some reusable metal cocktail sticks, so I designed 3D printed hearts for them with our valentines martinis (they’re pink, which makes them valentines-y) 🤣

State of Open Con 25 track content is now live on YouTube! Enjoy the full conference content across all 7 tracks for free. Check out the Future of Open Source plenaries, including @avi.press, Amandine Le Pape, @peterzaitsev.bsky.social, Anandhi Bumstead, @lu.is, Dan Lorenc

If you missed @binford2k.bsky.social, Brian Proffitt, Stephen Walli, and me at FOSDEM, the video from our talk about Forked Communities: Project Re-licensing and Community Impact is live now! fosdem.org/2025/schedul...

After 8 days in a row of conference events, most of them 10-12+ hour days, it’s good to be home. I’m taking a few days off, and we started with a cocktail and homemade sourdough pizza.

For anyone who wanted to 3D print their own OpenUK Earrings (or key chains or necklaces), I've uploaded the print profiles for small, medium, and large sizes (27mm, 20mm, and 15mm): makerworld.com/en/models/72...

I’ve lived in the UK for 10+ years. Today I learned that sherbet means something completely different here. In the US, it’s a frozen dessert with dairy. Here in the UK, it’s a sweet, fizzy powder 🤪😁

And @geekygirldawn.bsky.social shows us the data - forked projects are proving to have a positive impact on external contributions in #opensource! #StateofOpenCon #soocon25 #OpenSearch

Open source and forking - what does the data tell us? @geekygirldawn.bsky.social of CHAOSS provides an overview of the impact that a fork has had on three projects - ElasticSearch / OpenSearch; Terraform / OpenTofu; Redis / Valkey. Full data is at github.com/chaoss/wg-da... #soocon25

If you’re hanging out at #fosdem, you should join us in Janson at 5pm to hear us talk about Forked Communities: Project Re-licensing and Community Impact: fosdem.org/2025/schedul...

I don't want my appliances to be connected to the internet. I don't want them to have blinky lights or touch screen controls or be accessible by phone. All I want is for them to do the one thing they are supposed to do, and to beep less. Hear that, manufacturers? Less beeping.

will be at state of open con next week talking about relicensing and forking. there are plenty of great sessions about the present and future of open technology. amanda brock the organiser does a notably good job on D&I. some tickets still available. stateofopencon.com #stateofopencon #soocon25

Want to speak at a conference and want a tip to easily leave 80% of submissions behind you? Invest time in a precise abstract: one sentence of context (why should an attendee care?), one sentence: the problem (what?), one or two sentences on how the talk is going to address this (how?).

If you've wondered what we've been up to in the CHAOSS Data Science WG and what we're working on, I have a blog post just for you! chaoss.community/inside-the-c...

Have you bought your State of Open Con ticket yet? It's a great event and quite a steal at just £250 (~USD$300)! It's right after FOSDEM, so you can take the Eurostar from Brussels to London and do both events together!
