A tall beech tree, its bark covered with a thin white veil, and lots of very small black structures. Not a #lichen. Nearby were some fallen branches containing larger black growths until it became clear that this is some #fungus. Can any #fungifriends comment?

I went up to Harrop Tarn on Tuesday. There were several huge thalli of Parmelia saxatilis on a Beech tree, 10 to 12 inches across, and very fertile with lots of apothecia. [A thallus is the "body" of a single lichen.] #lichenGBI #lichens

Lovely variety of #lichens here. From L to R, a foliose lichen (a Punctelia), a fruticose (bushy) lichen, and a crustose lichen with lecanora-style fruiting bodies. Up in the tree canopy where there's plenty of light, there are usually far more species than at our eye-level.

Some clouds uplift the spirit. These cumulus clouds somehow enhance the blue sky. Other clouds depress the spirit, like the grey blanket of altostratus when it hangs around day after day. We need to get beyond our reactivity to see both with the eyes of equanimity. Have a good day every day #anapana

The #core of the #Earth spins around a slightly different axis compared to the #mantle. In this animation we start in a space frame and switch gradually to the frame spinning with the mantle. In that frame the core appears to wobble. The mantle precesses and the core, being fluid, lags a bit. 🧪 🔭

Today I was delighted to receive a copy of " #Lichens des arbres", one of three magnificent books in a series on Lichens in France. Some species are not found in GBI, but many are, and the magnificent photos make a wonderful resource to put alongside more wordy texts like LGBI3.
