An excellent (long) thread 🚢

Hey, did you know there's an alternative to ChatGPT that makes sense economically and doesn't destroy the environment? It's called English majors and they will happily fix all of your documents for the low price of health insurance and a living wage.

"The economy is weaker. Exports are down. The British have lost their freedom to live, work and love across the continent. Promised benefits never materialised. Businesses struggle with red tape. Farmers and fishers feel betrayed. The Brexit experiment has failed. It’s time to ask the people again."

The journalists I know at @NPR.org and @PBS.org are among the best in the business -- smart, open minded, independent and totally professional. Trump made clear in the Oval Office today that what he wants are journalists who will tell him that his policies are "wonderful," not ask tough questions.

Any discussion of why the U.S. doesn’t have high-speed rail should include at least *a mention* of the myriad ways that Republicans have blocked it: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

🔴 NEW 🔴 We have uncovered the mining magnates behind the new Reform think tank ‘Resolute 1850’ - which has already raised £1 million and is seeking more from MAGA donors. 📝 @desmog.bsky.social report with @adambarnett.bsky.social

A private equity firm just bought £1.6 BILLION worth of the NHS. It will make bigger profits by hiking rents for hospitals and NHS facilities. Previous govts privatized the estate. That means less money for frontline healthcare. NHS already drained by PFI and private contractors.

Here's the actual reality of a bus stop bypass, at any given time, on any given day. No interactions, no danger to pedestrians, VI or otherwise... but my wife, sister-in-law and daughter can independently and safely access local amenities without fear or risk of being crushed to death.

Was not expecting to open the main CBC page this morning and see this! In today’s climate, I feel our message is even more relevant than even just a few months ago when the interview was recorded. www.cbc.ca @christelvaneck.bsky.social @lydiamessling.bsky.social

Psssst... There's a new season of Black Mirror up on Netflix.

It'd take 20 years & billions to build a military that might defend NZ, but we'd still need alliances. We actually could invest in diplomacy now, at lower cost, with higher return,... oh right, the govt has cut the social science, humanities budgets.👀 Let’s be known for wisdom, not weapons. #nzpol

Call me old fashioned but I just don't think seeing yourself as a crappy doll is worth it, y'know?

Again: Britain (not just this government but all of the recent ones) has a problem with knowledge work. Fishing, steel are manly proper jobs with a Victorian sense of place and history. Creative industries & HE are treated as secondary; derided or ignored.

The moment a Low Traffic Neighbourhood goes in, drivers who want to rat run through your street will start shouting that ‘the old and disabled can’t cycle!!!’. As Zwolle, Netherlands, clearly shows, segregated cycling and LTNs *increase* freedom for those with mobility issues.

Read the thread above for some A grade heresy to the neo-liberal view.

Right, rant incoming on that Treasury fiscal policy paper. I'll start with the first paragraph of the cutesy summary version. Apparently, we have a 'public purse' that pays for services. Let's unpack that a bit - where is this public purse and how much is in it? [🧵 1/n]

Today on Volts: you ever wonder, what's going on in Finland? Well you're in luck! With today's guest, I dive into the country's enviably reliable grid (95% clean!), its oddly functional relationship with nuclear power, the way proximity to Russia shapes its energy security strategy, & much more.

High time we had a good talk about Atlas/Advance - what they do, who is behind these orgs - and the impact on parts of our community. Please join us in the morning #auspol

Tomorrow on The #SundayShot, @davemilbo.bsky.social and @instanterudite.bsky.social are joined by @anthonyklan.bsky.social & @lucyham.bsky.social discussing groups like Advance Australia and the spread of misinformation. Plus an interview with @transjusticeau.bsky.social's Jackie Turner.
