Your weather app gets its info because of NOAA. Your mail arrives at your home because of USPS. Your plane navigates the skies because of the FAA. Your food is safer -- and we get alerts when it isn't -- because of USDA. You hear about earthquakes *worldwide* because of USGS.

To the religious group giving out fully bound books of psalms in front of my kids’ middle school today: 1) good luck getting middle school students to do literally anything; and 2) if you have enough $ to print books that will very likely end up in the trash, you have enough income to be taxed.

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

GeoSPACE, our accessible hybrid field course, has found itself in need of fundraising due to recent events. Part of being accessible is offsetting the financial burden of attending. If you can spare anything to help out, a lot of students without other options would be grateful!!! ⚒️🔭🧪

"[For the Right], D.E.I...is the mere presence of a woman or nonwhite person or disabled or transgender person in any high-skilled, high-status position. And their alternative isn’t some heretofore unknown standard of merit; it is the reintroduction of something like segregation." (gift link)

Women and girls belong in science, and their inclusion fosters innovation. In 2025, we join the United Nations to celebrate 10 years of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science—a key milestone in advancing gender equality and empowering women globally.

Hear, hear!

Those millions of white men who lost out to a “DEI hire” in pursuing high-level jobs? It didn’t happen. #DEI www.wsj.com/business/dei...

Demagogues, oligarchs, and literal teenage boys are tearing apart our government. They are fueled by Silicon Valley’s dream of a monarchist network state and blood and soil white nationalism and every day they are in power means years of work required to fix it. www.garbageday.email/p/musk-s-sup...

For all the non-central valley folks, here’s some geographic context to highlight the absurdity of Trump’s Flows to Nowhere. Highlighted Kaweah and Tule rivers illustrate just how far removed they are from LA, w/ no connection to CA aqueduct that lifts water 1900’ over Tehachapi mtns.

✅ DEI Employer of the Day™ Albertsons (Safeway...) "commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging as well as thoughtful people practices are core elements of the company’s philosophy" "We believe that diverse perspectives strengthen and enrich our stores, our company and our society."

Stop fucking saying he blamed “DEI,” which is some abstract, non-tangible idea. He is blaming people of color having jobs he thinks they aren’t qualified for. He’s blaming race. He’s being racist every time he says it. Journalists need to get fucking backbones, my word.

i'm tired of being told to stop doomscrolling. i'm just scrolling, it's not my fault there's doom on there

I didn’t really believe it was about “health” last week. It’s not. Its about knowledge. Stopping science in its tracks. www.npr.org/sections/sho...

A Black woman named Aliyah was struggling to find work. So, she catfished herself and made a fake profile on LinkedIn named "Emily." Emily had the same qualifications as Aliyah but received 57.9% of interview invites while Aliyah received 8.9% This is what we mean when we say racism is systemic.

Two-thirds of Americans drink coffee every day. If Democrats can't make political hay out of TRUMP JUST PUT A 25% TAX ON YOUR COFFEE then I don't know what we're doing here. Figure comes from the coffee people: www.ncausa.org/Newsroom/Dai...

Faculty and staff at Sonoma State University were just notified of the closing of the Geology Department - they are organizing an email letter writing campaign for Monday 1/27 to rally support - see below🧪⚒️ It’s awful to see the closing of another Geology department and big loss for the community.

Fantastic article showcasing the inclusive field trip planned by IAGD at GSA this year

My latest on Trump's pick for the #2 spot at EPA. Among the legal work David Fotouhi has recently done is a challenge to the agency's asbestos ban www.propublica.org/article/davi...

Stay strong. For us, this is more than just a job-it’s a calling. Together, we will stand to protect our parks, environment, and wildlife. Four years… we remain hopeful that the attack on our public lands will be less brutal this time.

For those impacted by wildfire smoke, Scripps atmospheric chemist and aerosol expert Kim Prather recommends building Corsi-Rosenthal boxes—a low-cost and efficient way to reduce harmful aerosol particles. @ucdavisengineering.bsky.social has more on how to build your own. ⬇️

Underrepresented undergraduate & graduate students in STEM majors! Apply soon for the US DOE Mickey Leland Energy 10-week summer research internship on minimizing env impacts of fossil fuels & industry while working to achieve net-zero emissions. Geology students needed! orise.orau.gov/mlef/ ⚒️ 🧪

Biologists of Bluesky… what are these that I found on my grass? They are mostly spherical, about 1/2 inch diameter, clear to translucent, squish into a gel. A quick search indicated maybe slug eggs?

This is how you do science communication! Excellent way to stand out in a sea of posters 😍

AEG friends! AEG is now on Bluesky @aegweb.bsky.social

Someday I will make this my Halloween costume: the Asbestos lady! Perfect foe of the Human Torch because she was fireproof.

From AGU's Position Statement on The Responsibilities & Rights of Scientists "The right to respond to inaccurate portrayals of #science by any individual or group including government & institutional administrators, the media, private companies or industry representatives, & political entities." 🚨

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Each year, the trans community loses too many lives, especially trans women of color, to hate and violence. More than ever, we must stand by our trans family and support them, hold space for them, and insist the scapegoating and targeting stop. Now.

Hi Blue Sky! The International Association for Geoscience Diversity (the IAGD) is a volunteer-run, donation-powered 501c3 non profit dedicated to improving inclusion of people with disabilities in the geosciences. Follow along with our adventures and advocacy here 🧪♿⚒️

All of Trump's picks to lead health agencies have either spread anti-vaccine disinformation, opposed lifesaving public health measures during the pandemic, or promoted false health claims and unproven products. A Trump administration endangers the health of every person.

Geo buddies- come visit me at AEG’s booth at GSA Connects 2024! I have free stickers 🎉
