“…the movie’s most meaningful moments have nothing to do with the practice of architecture, w the Brutalist style, or even w the way wealthy clients + patrons exploit artists. Instead, it comes alive when it puts two kinds of vanity—of 🇺🇸 exceptionalism + of obscenely rich men—in its crosshairs.”

Mackenzie Scott looking smarter by the minute.

Remember when billionaires just bought and ruined sports teams instead of whole countries

Excited to take Screening Big Data to @vassar.bsky.social next week, to talk about how AI documentaries push the US-China tech war narrative for SV by drawing on a techno-Orientalist vocabulary.

Not 💯clear who these are at the moment, though

“The ads came in a long tradition of what might be called the Super Bowl’s tech-normalization movement, in which frontiers foreign or fraught are made safe by companies introducing them to us at our most guard-down moment: while we snack on chips hanging with friends.”

Lucy Olsen secures Hawkeye legacy with dominant performance over No. 4 USC. Iowa gets a signature NCAA Tourney win on Caitlin Clark's jersey retirement: 247sports.com/college/iowa...

In honor of the Caitlin Clark jersey retirement, we have re-branded our Iowa City store: FOREVER 22. It's like the Spirit Halloween of women's basketball. Just this week: drop by and take pictures or get shirts, whatever you want! #raygun www.raygunsite.com #caitlinclark bsky.app/profile/davi...

openai can steal from anyone, but no one can steal from openai

The chapter on Moneyball in my book discusses the technopolitics of nerds like “Peter Brand,” and points out how frequently neurodivergence is weaponized as a defense against accountability. It’s actually not fun to be proven right.

Blue sky is awesome because a bunch of people who like to make jokes and a bunch of people who are incapable of identifying a joke are forced to share space

stay in school and listen to your teachers, kids, or else you'll become the kind of dope who thinks "asking the right question" is some profound insight for the age of AI rather than a bedrock principle of every field of study

My column for @flowtv.bsky.social about how tech people say the darndest things. Be sure to click through to the referenced work by @proctorj.bsky.social and @daphnerenaidiz.bsky.social www.flowjournal.org/2024/12/auto...

12 years. RIP my darling boy.

When Beth Dutton complains about how wealthy outsiders and coastal elites cosplaying as cowboys are ruining Montana, remember that outside of Yellowstone, actual Montanans vote for people like Jamie.

I think calling creative work “content” is absolutely repulsive and if you ever hear me do it please know I’ve been taken hostage.

This was always the goal: remove human teachers from classrooms in schools and universities, except for the very rich who will be able to afford human instruction. This is why I have only contempt for teachers in higher ed who use AI in their courses--this is what you are actively escalating.

For fellow Virgos out there, this was kinda satisfying 🤣 IYKYK

In 2010, anti-copyright activist Aaron Swartz hanged himself after being prosecuted to the full extent of the law for making copyrighted academic publications freely available. Today, academic publishers are insisting those copyrights be lifted to feed the corporate AI slop machine.

Some of my students on this past semester’s tour of the Equinix MI3 data center on the old IBM campus where the PC was invented. I can never oversell this field trip. You never know how fascinating air return systems and backup generators can be until you get there.

Final four: Musk, Andreessen, Thiel, Altman Potential upset: Zuck vs Thiel in the regional final Game of the first round: Vance vs Andreessen

It would be incredibly important for Senate Democrats to confirm Lina Khan for another term. I've been working on consumer protection for more than 30 years, and she is the single most effective and remarkable public servant we have ever had doing this kind of work. She should be returned

It’s like a techno-media industrial complex. Someone should write a book about that 🙃

OK which one of you wise guys wrote the prompt for AI David Frum talking gender capitalism?

I'm on @bsky.app mainly to follow tech and politics... and the feed has been BLEAK. As ever, I'm thankful for Gramsci's exhortation for pessimism of the intellect, and optimism of the will.

Seat view of pre-flight drinks, from the row right behind first class. Does SkyMall sell pitchforks?

Folks, it sounds like he’s thinking of sending his kids there. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The shirt will make its conference debut at SCMS, where the title of my talk is: Ranchers, Machinists, and Working Moms: Silicon Valley’s Human Shields Against the Wrath of Lina Khan. 🤣🤣 She’ll be out then 🥲, but we will always have the warm memory of United States v. Google 😂

Fresh evidence that someone read the book. blog.betterimagesofai.org/%F0%9F%93%9A...
