Can Multi Use Games Areas be more inclusive? Our ParkWatch research highlighted that 92% of MUGA users in parks are male. Multi Use Games Areas are often seen as a good sports facilities for teenagers, but currently the use is far from equal. Got any examples that challenge the norm? Please share!

Letter: Students hold the key to active playgrounds 👧👦 Involving children in the design of their play spaces leads to more active and purposeful playtimes, argues Living Sport Lead and former teacher, Laura Williams Read more tinyurl.com/yc676x4f #Playgrounds #PhysicalActivity #School

We could have eliminated child poverty over the past 100 years but instead we eliminated the one amazingly beneficial thing that all children, rich or poor, had daily access to: outdoor play and freedom.

A Woonerf in the Netherlands. Through motor traffic is redirected to main roads. Greenery & street furniture (including a small playground) is strategically placed to ensure motor traffic keeps to slow speeds, with paving used & roadway raised at junctions, where collisions are most likely to occur

Catherine in Leeds - an amazing advocate and activist - did a great job explaining the value of play streets, and encouraging residents across the UK to get involved. More info on how to get started here: playingout.net/play-streets...

TT If your car was a tent, you would be criticized for taking up too much space and even occupying public space illegally. This shows that car parking hides an injustice: why not put trees, benches, a wide sidewalk there? #housse #tente #caisse Via @steinvanoosteren.bsky.social

Youth Mobility.

Urban Planning Diary Day 1 Today I saw a boy having fun playing a game that was painted on the street. Interactive street/sidewalk art is a great form of #placemaking that gets people engaged with the public realm and makes streets more people-friendly. #urbanplanning #urbanism

Possibly the single most accurate description of parenting from 1970-89 ever written.

For the last few months, @annmariepisano.bsky.social and I have been working on a new web project -- Brooklyn Playgrounds. Reviews and details of NYC playgrounds. This is peak millennial parenting. www.brooklynplaygrounds.com

As part of the Play Everywhere Philly Challenge, 10 community organizations in Philly are collaborating with local kids & community members to create new, interactive playspaces across the city. Read about how three of the projects at https://buff.ly/42v9Ctu.

Remember these big bastards?

“Fear in public spaces is a subjective feeling, but usually has an objective trigger and often arises from a collective experience.” I really appreciated this article-think that Seattle transit/public space advocates should give it a read. ht @theoverheadwire.bsky.social www.nzz.ch/english/in-s...

Am loving this book, full of photos of play structures, from the close up to the cityscape. Reassuring to know that Rotterdam has some terrible playgrounds too - though it has 1200 in total, from corner climbing frames to big parks, with 6307 registered pieces of play equipment.

“Parents who insulate their children from risky activities prevent them from making small micro-decisions about risk-taking. There is a dignity that comes with taking risks” Tomas Aylward, in Sylvia Thompson's article via @irishtimes.com www.irishtimes.com/ireland/educ...

A mobile bicycle-trailer pop-up library ... with hammocks. Genius.

"A city that is really concerned with the needs of its young will make the whole environment accessible to them, because, whether invited to or not, they are going to use the whole environment" Colin Ward in 'Child in the City'. See: urbanspringtime.blogspot.com/2021/07/the-... #publicspace #play

This has arrived and it’s fabulous, full of short essays about play and urbanism, waste, water and more, and lots and lots of pictures of play things!

Soft spaces out, stick-fighting in: Dutch call for the return of risky play

The city before the automobile. Trams, bicycles, pedestrians, horses. Quieter, more relaxed, and people still got where they needed to go (And got a little bit of exercise, too.) A dreamy view of #Barcelona, from a tram running down Carrer Gran de Gràcia, 1909.

The Peace Palace is an international law administrative building in #TheHague (the #Netherlands). It houses the International Court of Justice (= the principal judicial body of the #UnitedNations), the Permanent Court of Arbitration, an academy, and library. #urbanphotography #publicspace

Our Fred Kent led the master plan for Bryant Park in 1980, not longer after founding @ppsplacemaking.bsky.social in 1975 to put the work of #WilliamHWhyte into practice.

Leerlingen uit groep 7/8 die bij het ontbreken van het bovenste touw bij de Wadi een hele nieuwe uitdaging hebben gevonden; koorddansen! Wat heerlijk dat dit kan.♥️ #onderwijs #buitenspelen

I expanded my thread on junk and adventure playgrounds into a post with lots of extra info and photos!

Yes, absolutely to the positives of play ... BUT social media can also be play, and is not always bad, and enabling outdoor play is about much, much more than playgrounds. Children need to be able to play on their doorsteps, at a moment's notice and in 5 spare minutes, with friends and neighbours.

Still one of my most favorite public art projects. In #Montreal a few years back on Rue St. Catherine they had these "fun" streets signs. Just love how they celebrate movement, walking, public space and #bicycling. The signs were made by artist Cecile Gariepy and here are a dozen I took photos of.

Place is where the most potent & authentic power remains. With new power structures in America, defined by a culture of #placetaking, it's easy to forget how the most loved places preserve & pioneer what’s most cared about. How loved places & #placemaking can win: www.linkedin.com/pulse/progre...

Why don't they use the cycle lane? 🤔 Who designs this stuff!? #cyclinglife #commutebybike

Cleminson Street, Salford. Salford pioneered play streets, traffic-free from 8am till sunset (borrowed from New York) in the 1930s. Legislation followed: there were 700 in England and Wales in the 1950s, all but forgotten by the 1980s.

A great way to make soft transitions between a building (private) and the street ( #publicspace) are ground-floors with narrow units, many doors/windows, transparency, and benches. In this new construction project in #Rotterdam, the benches are included in the design. Smart choice! #citiesforpeople

“If you invite more cars, you get more cars. If you make more streets better for cars you get more traffic...If you invite people to walk more and use public spaces more, you get more life in the city. You get what you invite.” - Jan Gehl #StreetsForPeople #DulwichModalShift

Some countries who actually think of their citizens have rail so ubiquitious and high quality, they sometimes even have play areas, on the TRAIN: Finland & Switzerland.
