Sending lots of support to the NSF and NIH program officers who have been serving the science community in so many ways. Thank you 🙏

Well the NIH has cancelled the Women's Health Initiative, the largest study of women in history It has been running continuously since 1991 and has provided massive key knowledge about diseases in women Unreal www.science.org/content/arti...

Habs coach Marty St. Louis was hype after his team clinched a playoff spot last night 🔥

Yes. Imagine if Harvard said “We’ll keep our Boston campus, but because Trump Republicans want to make it impossible to have free thought in America, we are exploring a new campus in Toronto.” It would be a power move that would put MAGA on their heels.

“Terrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.” Diary of Anne Frank January 13, 1943

"Teenagers are becoming detached, withdrawn from society, and it's dangerous. What can we do?" Teenager: [Opens up about unfamiliar emotional issues affecting them] "Ha! Listen to them whine! Classic dumb teen angst. I don't miss that ... anyway, how come they're so withdrawn?" #RepeatAdNauseum

BREAKING: Ontario’s terminating its $100-million deal with Starlink, and US companies will be barred from future contracts. They warned NY, Michigan, and Minnesota if the tariffs persist, Ontario will impose a 25% surcharge on electricity and may cut off the supply entirely.

Looks like CSR meetings are being announced for NIH in the Federal Register

Just learned that Dr. Seuss drew this in 1941 www.artsy.net/article/arts...

Due to the Musk/Trump Administration’s draconian cuts, the National Science Foundation is significantly scaling back its program to provide college students with paid summer research internships. Many of my colleagues attribute their start in science to this program. www.science.org/content/arti...

Wondering if your study section cancelled? I update this sheet daily. As of today, 56/124 study sections that should have met since Jan 2, 2025 have "not met as scheduled." docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

“They will have drastic effects on all of us – this is not hyperbole, this is fact,” said Todd Wolfson, president of the AAUP. The orders “will kill” as advances in the treatment of diseases as diverse as cancer, Alzheimer’s and diabetes are delayed. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Almost all grant-review meetings under Trump 2.0 remain suspended at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), preventing the world’s largest public funder of biomedical research from spending much of its US$47 billion annual budget. https://go.nature.com/4gM6oW4

Happy to report that APA wrote this letter, gathered a coalition across science, and will now pay for ads for it to be disseminated in Science and Chronicle of Higher Ed to spread the word!! unitedsciencealliance.org

Judge Further Blocks White House Spending Freeze www.nytimes.com/2025/02/03/u...

I hope you will all join me in expressing your thanks to the NIH and NSF staff who are working in an impossibly difficult and chaotic environment to keep science going in our country.

Scientists at the CDC were ordered late on Friday to withdraw any pending publications, at any scientific journal, that mention terms such as “transgender,” “immigrant,” “LGBT” or “pregnant people.”

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.” University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

BREAKING: A federal judge has temporarily blocked a Trump administration freeze on federal grants and loans. U.S. District Judge Loren L. AliKhan blocked the action Tuesday afternoon, minutes before it was set to go into effect. The administrative stay pauses the freeze until Monday.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

URGENT! @WP just reported that 54 min ago researchers funded by the Department of Education were told they need agency permission to publish results.

This looks like part of a massive multi-faceted attack on scientists and universities from the Trump admin. They have cancelled funded federal grants, frozen NIH panels, promoted anti-scientific figures and conspiracy theorists like RFK Jr in positions of oversight. This is just beginning…

Excellent description of why the sudden & complete halt of the NIH is very alarming and if not reversed soon will have huge ripple effects on the health and well-being of Americans for a long time. Great explainer for folks who are unfamiliar with how NIH funding works www.msnbc.com/msnbc/amp/rc...

@repdingell.bsky.social @wyden.senate.gov I hope that the damage this is doing to health and science is being shared with your colleagues . This impacts everyone www.science.org/content/arti...

“The impact of the collective executive orders and directives appears devastating.” scim.ag/40ureTO

I just reached out to my senators about the NIH situation. If you need to find out how much impact NIH has in your state in terms of dollars in and their economic impact here's a link: www.unitedformedicalresearch.org/nih-in-your-...

Federal health agencies (NIH CDC FDA etc) are directed to pause external communications including scientific reports, updates to websites and advisories www.cnn.com/2025/01/21/h...

All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Pretty much exactly 80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, the richest man in the world uses the Nazi salute at the inauguration of his close ally as US president. What should rationally not be surprising is still so deeply shocking and simply difficult to comprehend.
