You wrote "Merz is much more likely to govern like Scholz than like Merkel" and I wonder if you imply that it would be better if that were not the case (or if it is just an objective description). As you stated at the beginning, Merkel's legacy is not what it used to be.

It seems I'm old. In my time, people would date because they liked the other person, not to "advance" something.

So, clearly something changed in the 1980's and was never corrected

I don't think anyone would do this type of salute unless they or their close circle have fascist views (or at least they don't see fascism as something bad, which is almost the same)

Good article. Quite bleak, but good.

There was an study about an increase in some type of C-section that was related to bigger heads, but that study didn't talk about brains per se (and not at all the relation to grownup's brain) nor intelligence: www.bbc.com/news/science...

I wonder if anyone in Germany would take any advice from a South African-born US-citizen as being for the benefit of Germany.

Perhaps they meant that everything is done "in their house", like the factory is actually their garage :)

For those interested, parental leave is shared between the parents: "Parental benefit is paid out for 480 days (approximately 16 months) for one child." www.forsakringskassan.se/english/pare...

It's very interesting that in several countries there is a significant decrease in consumption around 15 years ago (e.g., Portugal, Germany, Sweden). Is this a consequence of the economic crisis or a change in methodology? @hannahritchie.bsky.social

This is very normal, reminds me of my own childhood. It wasn't until my late teens that I realized I could do something useful with math/logical skills. As others have said, it helps if you see that you can create stuff with math. I would just wait and see, not everyone wants to win the Olympics :)

For example, minors cannot buy alcohol or tobacco products. Does this prevent that no one under 18 can drink or smoke? No, but not having restrictions would be worse.
I understand the privacy implications of trying to ban kids from social media, but the answer should not be "let everyone use it".

I don't know the details of this particular law, but I think social media is recognized for being addictive (they need you to stay on the app). In the places where I lived, there are laws that regulate addictive substances. These laws are not perfect, but they try to address a problem.

My comment was that, unless women are forced to get pregnant a certain amount of times while in space, the birth rates will be low and we would need to constantly send people so the settlement doesn't just die. Or we need to develop artificial wombs. Neither sounds like a good idea to me.

I imagine that you had a lot of material and didn't want to end up with a 2000-page book, so there's always a need to prioritize. My comment was more about how many things I didn't consider before reading this book. Truly enlightening!

Interestingly, the only point I had always thought as a showstopper for self sustaining space settlements, the failing birth rates, is not mentioned (or I missed it!)

These numbers can change several points in just a few weeks. In June 2022, both S and SD were polling almost as today, but on election day S did worse and SD, better. And we got the government we have now.

It would be interesting to see the result if more people voted. The turnout in 2020 was higher, but still below 70%

Will you make a stop somewhere else "close by", e.g., Stockholm?
