What happens when someone in police custody has urgent health needs? Dr @gethrees.bsky.social explains how healthcare is currently delivered in custody suites and sets out recommendations for change. Read the article here >> bit.ly/3ZxQysu

It's a busy time on @d-liveability.bsky.social! We are hiring a 12 month #postdoc Research Fellow to contribute to #qualitative analysis of suicide prevention policies + parliamentary debates: elxw.fa.em3.oraclecloud.com/hcmUI/Candid...

Received three highly supportive anonymous reviews for a book proposal today. Feeling a little overwhelmed by the positive comments from peers. I'm sure some, if not all three of you, are on here, so just posting to say thanks very much, completely made my day.

Quick plug for an event I'm speaking at tomorrow on forensic nursing. I'm specifically talking about past work on the introduction of FNEs into sexual offence interventions, but I'm sure I'll also comment on police custody. @kentishscribbler.bsky.social www.rcn.org.uk/news-and-eve...

Our Director @debcoles13.bsky.social spoke to The Law Show at BBC Radio 4 about preventing avoidable deaths. Listen to the full episode: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

The brilliant @ctmccartney.bsky.social speaking about prosecutions failing due to missing evidence. Interesting that NPCC suggests inability to get medical experts is the reason. Definitely something for me to reflect on in my forthcoming fellowship. www.bbc.com/news/article...

This has jumped to the top of my "To Read" pile. Saw a great presentation on this at the @fflm.bsky.social conference last year. Definitely a space where the construction of forensic medicine is a little too close to the criminal justice pole.

RCPsych, joined by leading health and social care organisations, is calling on MPs and the UK Government to reject plans to extend police powers - to detain and restrain people in crisis - to medical practitioners, under reforms of the Mental Health Bill in England and Wales.

@deecooke.bsky.social and I ran the Edinburgh Marathon Fest Half Marathon this morning. Didn't get the ambitious PB I'd hoped but still a PB (1:45:46). Have another half lined up in July where I'll try and dip under that 1:45 mark.

Excellent piece from @dralexispaton.bsky.social on both the moral and ethical problems with chemical castration (not to mention the fact that approaches like this fail to understand the underlying causes of GBV!!!).

Our handbook of Disability, Crime and Justice is out today, what a privilege it was for Steve and I to work with so many amazing authors to create this www.routledge.com/The-Routledg...

this is a letter to the editor from a high school track runner who came in second to a trans girl in a race. her state house rep in maine started talking about it. so she wrote this: www.pressherald.com/2025/05/14/r...

Incredibly proud of this new podcast with @robbiejourno.bsky.social and the Big Light. Young people are demonised on the street but what happens if we look through the stereotype and listen instead?

Brilliant project that I am loosely associated with, exploring the impacts on people's health of being engaged with criminal justice. Well worth keeping an eye on.

Created a podcast with Lesley McMillan, Andrea Quinlan and @jazzmoose.bsky.social on our project investigating forensic and support service responses to GBV in rural and remote areas. Found lack of anonymity and resourcing crucial to poor outcomes for survivors podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/s...

Canny run in Sunderland with the Town Moor Bench Runners for the Sunderland 10k. Goal race is the Edinburgh Half Marathon in a fortnight so this was just a tune up race. Still only a minute off my 10k PB, which means I'm in good form for two weeks time. strava.app.link/5TlvqzzzhTb

What about the research talent we already had but are losing due to the thousands of job losses in UK universities?

Delighted to have been selected for one of these Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowships.

Wow, what an incredible archival resource. Huge thanks to @inquest-org.bsky.social for compiling and making it publicly available.

Great to see this powerful report continuing to attract media attention @gethrees.bsky.social Watch our What is ‘Equivalence’ in Custody Healthcare? animation in full here > avstudios.com/project/heal...

The From Newcastle Blog asked me to prepare a contribution based on the end of project report for our police custody healthcare project. The blog post can be found here: from.ncl.ac.uk/quality-heal... Thanks again to @altviewstudios.bsky.social for the amazing images and animation.

How's that pandering to racists and reactionaries to defeat the far right working out for you? How many times do we have to warn about the damage this does to those at the sharp end, any sort of opposition, and democracy itself. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Which effectively means he is not at all concerned about tens of thousands of people losing their jobs, from cleaners to administrators, students and local businesses! And that he doesn’t care about the cities where universities are major employers and contribute so much to civic life.

Working with @northumbriauni.bsky.social and Durham University our researchers have found that people in police custody with health issues are regularly put at risk because medication is delayed or unavailable due to a lack of medical staff on site. #WeAreNCL

Thanks to @inquest-org.bsky.social for commenting upon and posting the findings of our research project.

Our latest animation—created with @gethrees.bsky.social and the team at Newcastle University—brings to life research from the ESRC-funded project, What is ‘Equivalence’ in Custody Healthcare? Great to see the media interest the report is attracting.

An article I co-wrote with an editor at @theconversation.com based on our Police Custody Healthcare project. Emphasis here on stigmatising practices that resulted in delays and/or denials of care. theconversation.com/from-withhel...
