They think they’d be thrilled, but some day they’ll be sorry they got rid of the intelligentsia: the scientists, doctors, historians, artists and writers who are derided for being “elitist” and “bleeding hearts”, but are actually vital to a thriving society.

It’s increased exponentially in the past year. And more would leave if they could. *I* would leave if I could.

and they did not allow women to enter even during a siren. But there was a big fuss and the municipality cracked down on that.
In a properly functioning society, there should have been an organized survey of what is and isn’t available. LONG ago.

Some buildings used their miklat for things like gyms or studios, definitely for storage. But I imagine since October 7th most of those have been cleared out and the spaces refurbished as necessary. The only exception I remember was a case from ‘23 where a miklat was being used as a synagogue,

Another tragedy is the silent emigration from Israel. Not just a brain drain, also a moral drain. Those who value rights and liberty, but have given up on opposition as a lost cause.

and the heaviest price will obviously be paid by those who are already vulnerable and marginalized. Instead of protecting them, we’re allowing a wartime Darwinism to kill them off.

Let’s say October 7th was a surprise nobody could have prepared for. This war was not. And yet once again we’re seeing the government rely entirely on the charity, resilience and improvisation of civilians. Instead of bolstering social services and funding community resources, we’re being sacrificed

It’s a real issue and it’s infuriating. Israel has obviously been investing in and planning the military strikes for years. We have the Iron Dome system, that’s good - but other than that, zero preparation for civilians on the home front. It’s all based on improvisation and volunteers.

אני לא חושבת שיש תשובה מוסכמת. יש כאלה שממשיכים להגיד ״לצייץ״, יש סתם ״לשתף״.
It’s not like we don’t all know that Bluesky is just a stand-in for old Twitter…

It’s not a failure but an abuse of leadership. This is a manufactured emergency that serves the personal interest of one extremely corrupt leader. He’s willing to pay the price in blood of thousands of his own citizens and tens of thousands of others, to keep his seat in power and out of jail.

Thank you, Kelly. I feel like I’ve been protesting and petitioning and demonstrating for years, and all it’s gotten me is to be stigmatized and demonized until I’m worn down to nothing. I really would just like to check out of this evil timeline.

That matters. I keep myself going by reminding myself of people who are affected by my presence in the world: my kids, my family, readers, friends, however distant. So thanks. ❤️

ourselves back to bed and try to go back to sleep, wake up the next morning and what? Business as usual? If I held in up to now by focusing on what I could do here and now and not looking too far into the future, this too is now impossible. What even is the point of it all. And we have it GOOD.

But it gets worse and worse and the last few days are not a routine one can live with. I.e., wake up several times a night to run to the closest shelter - inadequate but the best we have - listen to explosions outside, trying to guess which are interceptions, which are hits, how close - then drag >

We’re the frogs in the pan and the water’s been heating for a while now. I kept thinking our situation was intolerable and unsustainable and then somehow we got used to it. Compartmentalized the horrors, locked them away so we could keep going with some kind of daily routine despite it all.

I love how many people take pictures of snails. Beyond the slime, there is something so beautiful about them in an alien, mathematical sort of way. They were a highlight of the nature docu “Microcosmos” which I recall viewing in awe on a big screen ~30 years ago:

The difference between venom and poison is that venom needs to somehow enter your bloodstream, poison can be ingested in various ways. There are in fact people who drink snake venom with no adverse effects; but if you have a cut or open sore in your digestive tract, no go.

I’m sure there’s a business opportunity here somewhere. One could sell a spray to purify stalls of trans presence, so they don’t catch it. Something handy they can carry in their purse even to undesignated or unregulated toilets.
