So Zoom seems to be down...

Spent the day unexpectedly stuck in airports with cascading travel delays, but am on track to make it home tonight at least.

I keep seeing heartbreaking stories about people who spend years in grad school, apply to jobs, and only then learn that their dream job needs a skill they didn’t learn during grad school. Looking at job ads *now*, years before you’re applying, can help identify skills to develop. 🧪🌎🦑🐠

"So in 1984 in Kingston Ontario, this band called The Tragically Hip formed..."

I know it's crazy timing, nuts but Michigan Biophysics is hiring on the tenure track! App deadline is May 15. Join our interdisciplinary community. careers.umich.edu/job_detail/2...

Two-cat household milestone unlocked: cuddle puddle was spotted earlier today, complete with social grooming. They even both deigned to sit with me while I read this evening.

In case you, like me, are a high-anxiety human who missed this piece of moderately reassuring news: Despite many broken things, the FDA *did* make a flu shot recommendation for this fall. www.cnn.com/2025/03/13/h...

I lost my mom and grandmother to pancreatic cancer. Mom was only 47 and passed within 9 months of diagnosis. Its insidious. Hard to find early. Difficult to treat. Almost always fatal. This gives me so much hope… but there’s a bill in the U.S. to ban mRNA vaccines. We must push back.

You shouldn’t finish every book you start. Abandoning a book is not an admission of failure—it’s a sign of wisdom. You’ve decided to let go of sunk costs. The purpose of reading is to be entertained and informed. If a book doesn't bring joy or insight, it’s time to move on.

So it’s over then, works for me

Walz: "The idea that the secretary of education would not know what IDEA is -- individuals with disability in education act -- that's like your mechanic not knowing how to put air in your tire. And she's in charge of this nation's education progress. It is catastrophic."

It this going to replace the dumpster fire meme for 2025?

“The Great Gatsby is dated and irrelevant.” You’re right. What could a novel about a generation of young men becoming hustlers and white nationalists because they were sold a lie about the American Dream possibly have to say about our current moment?

Corbin has become the eldritch horror that extends disembodied limbs full of claws beneath the door trying to grab Fergus during treat time. (Ignore the dirty floor)

I’d seen humans do irrational things (a lot of irrational things) and encounter situations that made them act in ways that were counterproductive at best.

Defend the liberty of a stranger as you would defend your own, or that of a loved one, because that is what's actually on the table—whether we are a society that will sit still as our neighbors are snatched in the night, and disappeared into darkness, or a society that will fight for each other.

The way it works is that you strip fundamental rights from targets with less political support that people will turn their consciences off to justify persecuting and then eventually the state can do it to anyone, that’s always been the plan bsky.app/profile/pbum...

It’s a spring break miracle!!!

"You have made me feel like I do not belong in science & I cannot forgive you for that." BRAVO to this student. While I am so disappointed we are still navigating misoogyny in our educational and professional spaces, I am so grateful we have a generation who name it so clearly and capably.

A reporter asks Trudeau about Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly’s characterization of the current U.S. situation which she called a "psychodrama." "How would you characterize it?" Trudeau, speaking for a weary nation, “Thursday."

I luckily got a second MMR vaccination in grad school when an officemate contracted mumps. (They were ok). If you haven’t, look into if you need this. Also check if you need TDaP, which should be boosted every 10 years and gets overlooked.

"downsizes" is a weak way of saying "forced to cancel dozens of programs, which jeopardizes future STEM careers of talented undergrads" @science.org www.science.org/content/arti...

Chris I saw someone this very morning say “we don’t need NOAA, there’s weather apps on my phone” I am so tired.

“Stay angry, little Meg,” Mrs. Whatsit whispered. “You will need all your anger now.” Madeleine L’Engle might have been the first person to teach me that my anger was a superpower.

Finally an article that brings to light many of the things I, and others, have heard are happening at the NIH. Please read it (especially if you think court orders are stopping the crisis). It seems things are starting to move again but we should still be watchful (and support our agency colleagues)

Question for astronomers- do you have students who got into grad school this year who did NOT have first author publications/ no post-bacc work? Or are they the new de-facto requirements? With ~6-10% acceptance rates for many astro programs this year, just curious what trends others are seeing. 🔭🧪🎢

You know, it’s not like I’m half-assing this, I am actually trying my best despite the fuck-ups.

“Together, these actions will make people in the United States and around the world less prosperous and more vulnerable.” “We at Nature denounce this assault on science. And we encourage the global research community, wherever they can, to voice their opposition.”
