Just thought I'd re-up this one. The proposed #UCP tax cut in #Budget2025 will benefit high income tax filers, particularly men, with income over $60,000. Those with income less than $38,000 will see a small to no benefit. #abpoli #ableg policyoptions.irpp.org/magazines/ma...

As tariff uncertainty grips Canada & the carbon rebate is rolled back, affordability pressures will deepen for low-income households. Shaimaa Yassin and I advocate for better-targeted affordability measures such as an expansion to the GST/HST credit. policyoptions.irpp.org/magazines/fe... #Cdnpoli

I was reflecting on recent economic issues in Alberta and couldn't help but notice some policy changes put in place or announced recently by the #UCP that directly target low-income households. These include: (🧵):

Minister Devin Dreeshen didn't commit to a long walk through the downtown with Mayor Gondek. #yyc #calgary #yyccc

The UCP eliminated the child care subsidy today. This means low income families will now pay $300+ MORE per month than they were before. Once again, the UCP is raising costs on moms and dads. We understand that Albertans need real measures to make life more affordable. We are listening.

The AB govt announced a change to child care. Under the current system, parents pay out-of-pocket based on hours & type of childcare. Parents also receive a subsidy that is income-tested. The change eliminates the subsidy and standardizes the out-of-pocket amount www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?...

Yesterday, Pierre Poilievre announced that if elected he will reverse the increase in the capital gains inclusion rate. What does this mean for income and wealth inequality and fair taxation? Will it impact investment? See my latest substack: open.substack.com/pub/gillianp...

So anyways… The TBA folks are boosting this poll… Sure would be a shame if you voted in it… #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli www.westernwheel.ca/polls/do-you...

🚨 Parliament's prorogation puts critical climate and affordability initiatives at risk. Here are a few examples of what's on the line:

Months ago, a journalist working on a piece anticipating the PM's eventual departure, asked me for my views on Trudeau's policy legacy. I made extensive notes (NERD!), dividing things into net +, net -, and jury is still out, & across social, econ, & institutional policy. Here's the summary table:

Alright - last paper for 2024 has been submitted! I'm signing off for 2024. Happy holidays all!

I really want to read. For Christmas break, I've picked up The Big Fix by Denise Hearn & Vass Bedner and Power and Progress by Acemoglu & Johnson. On what day is it okay to stop analyzing data and start reading my holiday books? Maybe with a nice Christmas tea and a cozy blanket?
