I cannot emphasize enough that the New York City subway is not scary. It’s one of my favorite parts of living here. I grew up in the suburbs having to drive on highways everywhere and that’s way scarier

With the video game industry in an economic and intellectual tailspin, SEGA whispers “repurpose assets, put a pirate hat on it, and tell a simple story that makes people feel something” as it backs its U-HAUL away from the money factory, cash flittering from the windows

a good post, but I also recommend quitting absolutely everything for a little while and and then seeing how much information you still get regardless of trying to not know anything. it will be a lot, probably still more than you want or need to know! linksiwouldgchatyou.substack.com/p/how-to-sta...

@emilytav.bsky.social articulates beautifully what is different about civic tech (imperfect yes) & DOGE (disastrous)

I rarely comment outside my weird lanes but look, the whole AI Hail-Mary pass for execs is about crushing labor power, which is the main thing standing between them and total extraction. They hate their employees because [some of] their employees have self-respect and a moral compass.

This constantly gets brought up in response to AI criticism. No one objects to these applications. They object to the consumer facing dreck that's being marketed to us as groundbreaking and forced onto our devices.

can't decide whether or not it's cyberpunk that the impenetrability and obscurity of COBOL might be acting as fragile bulwark protecting government systems

Forcing buildings in NYC to keep trash cans like in the suburbs, but for without suburban yards to store them in and a thrice-weekly pickup schedule, seems to be leading a lot of them to just leave the bins out on the sidewalk semi-permanently

Streaming may have collapsed the distinction between TV and film, but each is a distinctive form Streamers tend to favor the one-long-storyline approach — serialized rather than episodic — and because of that our understanding of television’s potential has eroded That show shoulda been a movie

Congestion pricing continues to go as planned, with some buses running too fast for their schedules! This is an opportunity to use these improvements to run faster AND more frequent service.

DeepSeek took off in part because, in a first, it offered a reasoning model that explains to you what it's doing. Its success shows how little AI product teams have done so far to make their products appealing to normal people: www.platformer.news/deepseek-des...

watching TNG has me thinking when it gets warm I might fuck around and start dressing like off-hours Picard

Wait, what? Some dudes staged a live production of Hamlet during the Covid lockdown, but shot entirely inside the game Grand Theft Auto? And made a documentary? What?? Wow. it must feel terrible when someone takes something you made and uses it without permission or payment

Sorry to be A Geography Bitch about this but want to remind people that Google Maps has been doing dodgy shit labeling politically sensitive places differently depending on location for a long time, this is just the first time it's happening to a place related to the USA

“how is this lowering the price of eggs” as a gotcha is totally empty!! when have they cared about hypocrisy!!! they campaigned on punishing the freaks and they’re doing it!!! shut da fuck up!! how about showing some solidarity instead!!!!!!!

ppl on instagram are freaking out about how they are following trump or vance now "without consent" and it's like, yeah, you were following the POTUS and VP accounts...that's how that works. why are you following those accounts anyways? follow your friends and pro athletes and cool animals

They did this everywhere in NYC to cram in as many cars as possible. Do not tell me congestion pricing or the reclaiming public space we're doing are some extreme things

Yup, @jamellebouie.net has this exactly right. What these guys are celebrating/pursuing/yearning for is not masculine energy, it's *adolescent* energy. Drinking Red Bull, crushing Call of Duty, refusing to clean your room. It is indescribably pathetic. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/18/o...

One of the reasons I’m highly skeptical of the MTA’s math, which alleges 1 out of every 7 riders isn’t paying. bsky.app/profile/jess...

fascinated by a rhetorical strategy i see all the time now, which is making up an extreme edge case to argue against doing anything for the public good, and doing this from the putative left.
