The observed slow-wave subtypes likely follow different regulatory processes and may serve unique functions during NREM sleep. Our results may help reconcile previous conflicting evidence regarding thalamic contributions to slow-wave regulation.

C1 waves, characterized by a thalamic fMRI-signal increase, include efficiently synchronized waves associated with arousal activation. C2 waves, marked by a negative fMRI response, include smaller slow waves potentially resulting from cortico-cortical synchronization.

We analyzed 24 whole-night simultaneous EEG-fMRI recordings from 12 healthy adults and performed unsupervised clustering of slow waves based on thalamic BOLD signal patterns. This analysis revealed at least two distinct types of EEG slow waves, each characterized by a specific thalamic response.
