A pathetic and humiliating walkback from the would-be destroyers of CFPB, who know they've lost in court and can't kill the agency. This email from Mark Paoletta went to employees today. It neglects Vought's Feb 10 "stop-work" email that superseded it, ending all activity with no exceptions.

True and also kinda reads like a how to support every single point in someone's request for a TRO, that statement.

Also @thenation should be headlining that with a picture of empty chairs in Congress. Anything but a picture of the Mad King making him look like a normal President. I have no idea what leverage writers have over headlines and images, but they should use every bit of it and build more to get […]

“The image of a naked emperor, speaking to a half-empty chamber, applauded only by his sycophants and owners, is exactly the scene the country needs to see.” This absolutely should happen. It's materially important. As Democrats take abnormal actions within their representational remit it will […]

“Recall the astonished recognition – it was ever-so-brief – that teaching was the most important and most difficult job and that teachers needed to not just be praised but compensated much much much better. And now, that’s been erased — purposefully; and conservatives and technologists and […]

someone asked AI to generate a guide to asking people out and I cannot get over this panel. this is AI's finest achievement as art. would you like to grab crab sometime? grab crab. would you like to grab crab? grab crab. 🦀🦀 (originally posted by keepingthecommontone to r/chatgpt)

In programming YAGNI stands for You're Absolutely Gonna Need It and is used to label things you'll predictably later regret not doing.

A natalist conference featuring speakers including self-described eugenicists and promoters of race science, apparently including the man behind a previously pseudonymous race-science influencer account, and the founder of a startup offering IQ screening for IVF embryos, will be held at a hotel […]

“How Democrats Lost Their Way” I want to be wrong (with a zillion people) about The Democratic Party learning only wrong evil lessons from Bill Clinton, as old hands reach for smooth "join em to beat em" levers their soul-poisoning built and polished. But I'm not wrong about why such a reach […]

‘Centrist’ Dems think the way to win is to embrace more American patriotism Uh https://www.politico.com/news/2025/03/02/third-way-patriotism-democrats-campaign-00206890

Finished V2 of the truncated icosahedron, and I'm very happy with how it turned out. The sides are 32 hexagonal and pentagonal PCBs, joined by 3D printed corner connectors and covered with 3D printed diffusers. The pixels are mapped and it's running 3D animation patterns on a #pixelblaze.

I’d probably subscribe to your email newsletter thing if it wasn’t on Substack. Just sayin.

“The problem here is that [Library of Congress Subject Headings] is the de facto standard for controlled subject terms in libraries across the Anglosphere. If the US President decides that the official US name for Australia is now "The US Federal Territory of Kangarooland", then under current […]

"The more acutely a man experiences masculine discrepancy stress, the more likely he is to harm other humans. What does that mean when the richest, most powerful men in the world suffer from masculine discrepancy stress?" by @celestedavis.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/celestem...

Tricks that work on a few fractions of a percent of people are tricks that win things that turn on a few fractions of a percent. One such trick is making people rage at the tricked for being people. Thanks for coming to my talk. I will not be taking questions though because this point cannot at […]

Someone should get something about nationalizing Sssubsstack published in a Postmedia newspaper 😏

pssst kids! NYC DOE wifi blocks facebook, X and instagram… (as they absolutely SHOULD!) but *not* the fediverse and mastodon. 😉 #badinfluence #goodInfluence #socialmedia #fediverse #nyc #education

As usual, there are people picking up shards of patriotism to resist with. But it's broken glass. Not a good organizing tool. Trying to use it mostly just makes your hands bloody and useless for real work.

Saw a post somewhere that the 18F victims should get together and form a consulting company. There will demand for there services to put together what the DOGE wizards break… https://18f.org

Keep ‘em coming “Hundreds of people gathered on Saturday at national parks from California to Maine to protest the #Trump administration’s firing of at least 1,000 National Park Service employees last month.” https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/01/us/national-parks-trump-protests.html

"I was shocked. I was shocked...I just didn't think it was actually going to happen" – Hunter Schafer, on having her new passport gender designation changed to male by the Trump administration. She does at least acknowledge the privilege that allowed her to ignore the reality of what was […]

Now is a good time to start using social media to amplify images and video of protest, especially if you have a significant following. We've known since Occupy and Arab Spring that social media is a remarkably potent tool when it comes to forcing mainstream media to cover militant dissent.

1. Montana’s House has passed an indecent exposure bill that applies only to trans people. It sets out one standard for cis people that requires intent, and another for trans people that does not. Trans Rep. Zephyr delivered scathing remarks. Subscribe to support our journalism.

Just to say the obvious bit out loud - Trump, VD Vance and Elon Musk are bullies. They’ve made their whole careers via it. They shout at people, send mobs after them, complain to employers, threaten legal action, etc etc etc. It’s all about silencing speech which causes them discomfort. Elon […]

Wow, the daily ski report for Sugarbush VT, where a certain member of the WH planned to take their family.

I suspect the Empire can afford almost any premium on gas.

A Trump advisor claimed @w7voa had posted “treasonous” toots in not supporting the federal government. His employer has placed him on leave. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/28/business/voice-of-america-trump.html?unlocked_article_code=1.0k4.1rLm.gTMqq72O5Ob2

In some way the firing of gov tech workers is also about scaring others from taking alternatives paths other than exploitative tech work. So many of us looked at big and mainstream and ad tech and surveillance tech today and said nope, and took our skills elsewhere. This plants the seed of […]

“the effort rests on an assumption that most government employees are useless” (from The Atlantic, about doge) So, what do that phrase's connotations rest on? That stone says "Useful employees should not be fired" A good rule. Seems benign. Yet if turned we reliably find "It's OK to eliminate […]

the destruction of 18F is a wrecking ball to the real and meaningful efforts—by some of the best and sharpest people in US tech—to make government work *for people*. such a kick to the chest.

Keep ‘em coming “ #IRS rejected request for addresses of people believed to be in U.S. illegally Immigration enforcement officials sought home addresses for 700,000 people and asked for skilled auditors to investigate businesses. The tax agency is forbidden from sharing protected information […]

Farce and tragedy are so deeply fractal. Farces within tragedies at every scale in every sphere all at once. Anyhow, the agonizingly slow Twitter reckoning sucks 🦥 The Sssubsstack reckoning is gonna suck. iPhone? Oof. The cameras fools are decorating their homes with? Good grief. It's like […]

Democracy dies first as farce, then as tragedy. I know this because I grew up in a dictatorship. I write these words with the awareness that they won’t change anything. But silence is its own form of complicity. If we cannot halt this retreat, we can at least name it for what it is. This is […]
