WOW, thank you all for the outpouring of support. Know that I am reading all of them & want to thank everyone individually. Also, I did decide to share on Twitter/X (only to raise attention for the NOAA community)... and omg, the hate on that website is shocking. Never again. Truly a horrific space

Seismic activity NE of #Santorin keeps on evolving with the occurrence of M5+ earthquakes during the last hours.

The World Health Organization lost two members this year.

Sunday update. Seismic activity has decreased significantly since last Thursday, but it hasn't stopped. To be continued ... #Santorini #Amorgos

Fourth Greek Island declares State of Emergency over earthquakes (Ios, which joins Santorini, Amorgos, and Anafi). (also, now over 17,500 earthquakes since Jan 26th) https://www.ekathimerini.com/news/1261812/fourth-cycladic-island-in-state-of-emergency-over-tremors/ #earthquakes #volcano […]

There was an extended period of more-or-less continuous tremor near Santorini last night. Confirmed by the EMSC on Twitter.

🧪⚒️ The seismic swarm in Greece continues - and GPS stations on Santorini show that the island itself is deforming, signaling likely movement of magma deep in the crust. In our latest post, we explore a new detailed seismic catalog and come up with a possible interpretation. Read more:

Moment magnitudes and corner frequencies calculated for 437 events from the Santorini crisis (Ml>3.5, Jan 24 - Feb 13) using SourceSpec. Big thanks to the EIDA node of the National Observatory of Athens for keeping their services online during this critical period. sourcespec.seismicsource.org

A M6.0 has just struck Metahāra, #Ethiopia. The focal mechanism suggests the earthquake may have been of volcanic origin, with magma having been present in the area for several weeks. #earthquake #terremoto #terremoti

Seismic activity NE of #Santorini has decreased dramatically over the last 24 hours. This behaviour is similar to that observed in SW Iceland in March 2021 and August 2022, where seismicity almost stopped after the eruption began.

Pink dots are earthquakes, white dots are people. Great animated map by @lastquake.bsky.social

In April 2024, extremely intense precipitation triggered a cluster of over 2,500 landslides in Jiangwan, Guangdong Province, China. Before and after satellite images by @planet.com show the devastation:- eos.org/thelandslide...

The latest events (white dots) seem to be concentrated at the north-eastern end of the swarm. #Santorini #Amorgos

Hi Seismo-Bluesky! I decided to test a pipeline with SeisBench, PyOcto, NonLinLoc, and HypoDD on the Santorini sequence. The level of activity (>4,500 events) is truly stunning! There are repeated bursts migrating backwards and forwards, spreading outwards from a narrow, almost linear channel.

This looks just great ! I definitly need to dive into Seisbench/PyOcto stuffs ...

Updated map of seismicity between #Santorin and #Amorgos + Gutenberg-Richter distribution.

Experts interpret the #santorini earthquake swarm to be primarly caused by tectonic processes. One of the attributes to distinguish earthquakes associated with volcanisms from these tectonic processes is the distribution of earthquake magnitudes. (1/6)

High-precision relocation of earthquake activity offshore Santorini, Greece (2024-01-01 to today).

Xinhua has released this image of the #landslide that killed 30 people in Sichuan today. Look at the super-elevation as it went round the first bend. It was moving quite fast.

Streets (almost) deserted. #Santorini

Trump’s crackdown on academic research has no parallel in the modern scientific era. No US presidential administration has ever gone through already-funded Congressionally-mandated scientific grants and culled newly disfavored buzzwords. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

And of course, there’s an English version as well for our Q&A about #Santorini 👉🏻 www.gfz.de/en/press/new...

Updated version of our seismic activity maps in the Cyclades Islands with 1461 earthquakes recorded since January 27th. We have a special report page : www.emsc-csem.org/Special_repo..., Please refer to the Greek authorities for more information. Stay safe.

Updated version of the seismic activity in the Cyclades Islands, and the Gutenberg-Richter law, with 1303 earthquakes since 27th January. Please refer to the Greek authorities for more information, stay safe.

Some of you were waiting for it: Here's our new data visualisation of the earthquakes near #Santorini, provided by our colleague Marius Paul Isken, and located with pyrocko/qseek. It includes yesterday's quakes and starts January 29. Marius included a nice twist, so to speak. Wait for it.

Read our new post, with updates on the seismic swarm in Greece. The seismicity seems to be migrating to the northeast, and maximum depths are shallowing. Rates of seismicity have held pretty steady since Feb 2. earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/update-on-...

Now Musk has sent Booger, Broccoli Rob and Big Balls to the NOAA, in order to be sure us freeloaders stop getting all those free warnings about hurricanes and stuff.

The EMSC opened a special web page on #Santorini earthquake sequence : www.emsc-csem.org/Special_repo...

Hopefully the installation of these new ocean bottom seismometers will help in determining better epicenters and depths for the #earthquake swarm near #Santorini. 🧪⚒️ www.ekathimerini.com/news/environ...

The seismic crisis between #Santorini and #Amorgos has been slowing down a bit during the last 24h and shows a slight migration toward the NE.

🧪⚒️ A swarm of earthquakes has been rattling the Greek islands. Today marked the largest event in the swarm so far (M5.1). Schools are closed and emergency crews have deployed. Could the swarm trigger a really big earthquake, like the M7.8 in 1956? Read more on Earthquake Insights:

Since January 28th, the island of Santorini has experienced a significant increase in seismic activity. More than 555 earthquakes with magnitudes up to 5 have been recorded. These earthquakes are concentrated about 25 kilometers northeast of Santorini.
