Incidentally, we also have what to my knowledge is the only treatment on the idea of space Company Towns that actually interfaces with the relevant literature, which is copious. It's a nuanced picture, but a really important part is that even with good leaders, the structure can have problems.

During the stories, Aargh often leaves the main character (MC) to do his own business with other creatures, because he's not the MC's babysitter, or because he's not interested - and has to be convinced by others. He also refuses to enter cities/towns. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_...

I'm of the (unpopular) opinion that animals will be animals. Your housecat cannot be trained to scout unless you put massive training time in or are a druid/ranger. Even then, they are a cat and may get bored/distracted. Even animal companions should be like Aargh, from "The Dragon and the George"
