Artemisia Gentileschi's "Hercules and Omphale," badly damaged in the Beirut explosion of 2020, goes on display next month at the Getty after an intensive restoration campaign

The Three Fates are an ancient triad in many cultures and worth researching further. In ancient Greece they are Clotho (the spinner), Lachesis (the allotter), and Atropos (who cuts the thread of life). In older myths they're the daughter of Nyx, who is the Primordial Goddess of Night.

I kinda wanna do research on this and interview a bunch of people if they actually went on to be what they chose as babies lol

Zhuazhou (抓週) is an ancient Chinese ritual, where parents place their 1-year old on their birthday before objects: objects that symbolize the future like job choices. Essentially the infant is picking their future, in theory. #LegendaryWednesday

Japanese raccoon dogs are called Tanuki (狸). In Japanese mythology these adorable animals are tricksters who love sake more than trouble, and will go to great lengths to gain it. Many pose as priests to get it, and can be quite friendly. #WyrdWednesday 🖼: Yoshitoshi

Eight days after birth, the Fates come to a newborn and it is then and there the child's life path is determined. Their profession, their love life, their death: the Fates determine it all in this ancient Greek superstition. #LegendaryWednesday

Ravens are key to the Pacific Northwest, representing the trickster deity who brought the sun for the world and also the tricksters always getting into trouble. Both creator and mischief-maker, the ravens of the region are much beloved, at arm's length. #WyrdWednesday

Today is #WorldBeeDay which is a great day to grab a copy of my book 'Telling the Bees and other Customs' which examines folklore and rural crafts. There's a whole chapter on bees and beekeeping. You can grab a copy here www.thefolklorepodcast.com/store/p71/Te...

The Starling - In Welsh folklore the Drudwen (Starling) carried a message from Branwen across the Irish Sea to her brother Bendigeidfran, the king of Britain, to inform him of her mistreatment, launching a war. It's one of my favourite stories!

The first bees were born of Ra's tears, and their honey a sacred, sweet treat. Honey was used commonly in Egyptian baking and medicine, with bees and honey appearing in hieroglyphics and jars of honey found in tombs across Egypt's history. #FairytaleTuesday

Bees are sacred to Apollo, and honey has been offered to the gods for three thousand years, since the days of Mycenae. The Oracle at Delphi was offered honey and said to be a Bee, bringing prophecy down from Apollo; apiaries were connected to the god as well. #FairyTaleTuesday

Four tornados in the area around me. Haven't been out to see how bad it is, but we only lost power for two hours.

❤️ Fun fact: The Jolly Jumper was invented by an Indigenous Canadian woman named Olivia Poole.

New head canon: Since the Souledge series Siegfried is supposed to be the same guy from mythology, Souledge is the ring of Nebelung. 🤔 💭

The Two-Mouthed Woman, the Futakuchi Onna, is a seemingly normal-looking woman who comes as a guest to a home in Japanese folklore, only for food to mysteriously disappear: hidden deep in her hair is a cursed second mouth, which must eat! #MythologyMonday 🖼️: M. Meyer

In Wagner's Ring Cycle, the Ring of the Nebelung is Albrecht's Ring, a cursed ring from a hoard of gold who curses all who hold it, including the hero Siegfreid and the warrior-queen Brunhilde: its destruction destroys the gods of Asgard. #MythologyMonday

It was the wedding of the epoch: Zeus and Hera, how could anyone refuse? Well, Turtle did: it wanted to stay home. Thus angered, Zeus cursed the turtle to forever carry its home on its back, giving it no excuse next time ("Next time!?" said Hera). #MythologyMonday

The new Neil Halloran documentary on Smallpox has completely changed how I see the RFK Jr. version of the world. Neil (softly) argues that realizing that disease isn't the fault of the sick /or/ the fault of the Gods ushered in a new future where we felt the authority to care for each other.

In these dark times, it’s great to come together and find something we can all take joy in.

Book concept: People start finding books in a Little Free Library that were never written or published in this world. Some are exactly what the "borrower" needs. Some are a delight. But some are dangerous. And the Little Free Library just might have a sinister agenda...

The only immigration reality TV show I’d watch is if you take all the authors of those “Japanese wisdom” books, have them live together in a Saitama share house and watch them adjust to their new entry level jobs at large Japanese corporations in Tokyo.

The Moka Exchange in Papua New Guinea is the ritual exchanging of pigs, often involving a "Big Man" who is at once the receiving and giving end of the exchange. Giving symbolizes status: the more one can give, the more favors owed, the bigger the man in the community #FolkyFriday

Ķekatas is a masked procession on the night of Ziemassvētki, an ancient Latvian ritual to seal away evil and bring good fortune and blessings. These mummers leap and hop in the night on December 24th and 25th, helping to prepare for the new year. #FolkyFriday 🖼: E. Dajevskis

By an amazing coincidence, people targeted by ICE have criticized the Israeli genocide in Gaza, Trump, or (as in this case) Putin. It's almost as if ICE was targeting people based on their political stances, and was specifically aligned with Russia's dictator. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...
