The price of housing is set by supply and demand; and we can observe the balance between supply and demand by looking at vacancy rates. Low vacancy rates give landlords power to jack up rents. Housing abundance empowers tenants to demand cheaper rents. Everyone with money on the line knows this!

This is important research by Jablonsky, Ast & Partners in Canada Keep tall building form simple, and you can save huge amounts of embodied carbon Vital for planners, architects and engineers alike

Those of you who aren't San Diego Politics freaks probably don't know that Trump crony and tariff mastermind Peter Navarro is a former Democrat and arch-NIMBY. Before tariffs, his big idea was a "housing development moratorium" in San Diego. A huge dumbass across two parties

Single stair has landed in Austin, with a 10-1 vote no less! Huge win for abundance in the Texas capital. 🏆 Who’s next? 👀

I assumed this article was about zoning, because that is the most common legal tool used to block projects people in power don't like. The zoning code in Selah, WA requires 2x as many parking spaces for mosques as any other religious building. This is totally legal and many people approved it. 😵‍💫

Building new buildings is the only way to create the inclusive world imagined by the ADA and Fair Housing Act amendments, but now it’s progressive to oppose changing the world because it’s just more “stuff”.

I understand the need to avoid infighting right now, but who’s fault is it? In functioning democracies, party leadership resigns when the party loses an election. It’s past time for new leadership.

NEW STORY // Op-Ed: Single Family Zoning Is Keeping Seattle Inaccessible to Disabled People www.theurbanist.org/2025/03/11/o...

Here’s a solution to the “unfunded mandate”: Repeal the zoning enabling act. Zoning’s purpose is to: 1. Segregate people by class 2. Concentrate lower classes near environmental hazards 3. Prevent in implementation of accessibility laws by banning any building that would trigger them.

Oh hai.

When American planners say new infill buildings “aren’t feasible” without land assembly, it usually means: 1️⃣ Our city imposes minimum parking mandates. 2️⃣ Our state building code bans the kind of modern, fire-safe single-stair apartments that are routinely built in the rest of the world.

I can’t believe it - after years of advocacy, exclusionary zoning has ended in Cambridge. We just passed the single most comprehensive rezoning in the US—legalizing multifamily housing up to 6 stories citywide in a Paris style Here’s the details 🧵

What would it look like to “pig butcher” the United States government?

Who wore it better?

Would be nice if #mapoli could get this done even for government jobs.

Which North American city should go next on congestion pricing?

Many people claiming it’s unacceptable to criticize California’s leadership during this crisis because people are hurting. I think that’s mistaken. When there are mass shootings, we rightfully call out enabling politicians. These criticisms either have merit or they don’t. Engage with that.
