The masks, bought for €100 million, were never used because they contained graphene and were branded a risk to public health. Neither Van Lienden and his friends – who are also standing trial for fraud – nor the health ministry come out of this with any credit at all.

The state and SHA both sued the trio. The court found that the health ministry was aware that the contract was with the commercial business, but SHA was not. So the damages go to SHA, which has promised to pass the money on to good causes such as the Long Covid Foundation.

Sywert van Lienden and his colleagues set up a non-profit organisation, Stichting Hulptroepen Alliantie (SHA), but also a commercial company that actually did the deal with the Dutch government. They told the media and SHA's volunteers that SHA bought and sold the goods.

The toeslagenaffaire has cost the Dutch state €9bn and counting. The student funding service has set aside €61m to compensate students who were discriminated against by fraud checks. The cabinet could go a long way to plugging the holes in its budget if it cancelled racism and discrimination.

Schuiling is in court later today to contest a €250 fine for exposing himself in his car. He claims he had to pull over because of sudden stomach pains caused by a medical condition, and his efforts to relieve the agony were misinterpreted by another motorist.
