This Memorial Day weekend: Why not watch some big, beautiful WWII-era anti-Nazi propaganda movies? desire-paths-a4c079.beehiiv.com/p/hangmen-al...

I guess the only way to get someone to read your dissertation is to -become pope- www.nytimes.com/2025/05/22/u...

I could watch Gene Lockhart absolutely squirm as a Nazi collaborator over and over again on a loop -- imagining the quislings of our era in his place. -- from Hangmen Also Die! (1943)

Celebrating the day by herding some nerfs. (Ha! As if I don't herd nerfs every day. I'm such a nerf-herder! A Nefherd, if you will.)

Highly recommend any WWII-era anti-Nazi films on @criterion.bsky.social or elsewhere. They used to seem quaint but they hit different now. "Hangmen Also Die!" by Fritz Lang is a banger; the few "preachy" scenes are welcome! Preach!! Tell me how much you hate Nazis!!! Love it!!!!!

I've got the 23 part but the "and me" part isn't discoverable via DNA testing. desire-paths-a4c079.beehiiv.com/p/i-don-t-ne...

If I had to live in one America, it would Walt Whitman's. (Hopeful, pluralistic, homoerotic, fully engorged, incorporating all the parts, even the shins, totally ecstatic, uncontained, striving...)

Silence = "I'm too annoyed to say anything"

In our local elections, candidates were arguing over who supported trans-people more. I suppose I'm in a liberal "bubble" but it's still heartening.

Would prefer some non-bitter ironies.

Don't put a tariff on my love, baby / it'll hurt you more than it hurts me / you'll break down and weep / if my love don't come cheap

MS Word wants to change "writ large" to "write large" and "good humored" to "good, humored" but tell me again how I should let GenAI write for me?

"Big Balls Needs a Drum Circle" is a title that will briefly make sense -- today's "men's leaders" are a lot scarier than they were in my day. (And my guru was pretty out there!) desire-paths-a4c079.beehiiv.com/p/big-balls-...

Tonight in my (state/federally funded) English language class we are reading about extended families. (Vocab like "niece" etc.) So, "gender ideology" I guess?

Hello #WritingCommunity 👋 I like to try my hand at everything, from speculative to humour to #historicalfiction. Delighted to have a story in the @sundialmagazine.bsky.social anthology ACROSS THE MOORS AND TIDES with a cast of incredible writers. Check it out: sites.google.com/view/sundial...

Please give Zahn McClarnon all of the awards for Dark Winds. (Too under the radar, for sure -- just tell your friends it's "Game of Thrones on the rez in the late 60's"; it's not, but maybe they'll watch it then. G RR Martin is a producer. )

This Thursday, another "Desire Paths" drops -- you won't want to miss it! desire-paths-a4c079.beehiiv.com/subscribe

Extremely old man voice: "Tic-tacs? Ban them? Well... the orange tacs crossed the line. Such a thing as too much citrus flavor, young man. Too much... citrus...remember..."

Wish I could be credited for "miscellaneous screaming" on a recording, as Edgar Winter is on this Muddy Waters LP I'm digging RN.

Pulling out of tough illness and brain is on static / wife speaks to me but seems to be on a separate timeline, says I'm being weird. The ordinary is alien. RIP David Lynch, from my brain.

I guess what I'm saying is that it was -interesting- to grow up with David Lynch; he hit right when I was most susceptible to being punched. (By art in a good way.)

I watched the first episode of Twin Peaks at a special screening at Cinema 21 in Portland OR in college -- I thought it was a new movie. The f*ckin' stoplight at the end still haunts me.

Not sure if I should say I -should- have been watching Blue Velvet in HS (when it came out) or I -shouldn't- have, I can only say it had an EFFECT.

On having my portrait painted when I was 20 years old. desire-paths-a4c079.beehiiv.com/p/iterated-f...

These are excellent! My music partner and I have a banger -- but we really need to work on the production values.

If you write about a captain you will, maybe once a day, write "catpain" so it's best to avoid captains altogether IMHO.

PS -- The best entry into Greenland discourse is Conan O'Brien's trip there; streaming on Max if you have that. Recommend.

"Gulf of Mexico" sounds good because it is a trochee followed by a dactyl (which is almost like two trochees, really, but with a certain trailing sense of wonder in the final unstressed syllable; almost wave-like.) "Gulf of America" -- trochee followed by two iambs?!? Yuck. Ugly.

Good day to write a post/skeet responding to some minor BS and then discard it. Very freeing.

My daughter knows me well which is why this is an old 45 she painted with me and Keanu reeves “rockin’”

Because I am blog-years-old I posted a blog entry on becoming a Vinyl Man. (Vinyl as human reaction to inhuman products.) Anyway: jgourlay.com?p=260

Since my wife isn’t on here I can tell YOU that I bought her a Prince-themed purple rain candle at Electric Fetus in MNPL

Sure delayed gratification is great but have you ever tried instant?

Since I already preordered I’ll let others line up for this goodness (honestly if you don’t get a free one, just preorder… or even if you do get a free one.)

My favorite Xmas movie is any version of invasion of the body snatchers bc why not? Similar vibe (Xmas and body snatching)

Surprising amount of Amish on Amtrak today. (Pleasant surprise)

Apple has finally gone full Zen koan with their latest update and made a podcast app that does not play podcasts.

AI Search: Instead of using a shovel to dig this hole , please ask a spoon to guess where to dig based on the usual places spoons have dug in the spoon database. Oh, and the spoon generates the same pollution as a diesel truck.

I know we are concerned with national politics, but locally nothing is more divisive than "village abandons leaf collection."

Instead of my mandated HR training I watched Miller’s Crossing. (Ironically it was all about ethics!)

What's funny is that it actually -did- have meaning. (Just not one they were looking for, I suppose.)

NBC is getting very existential. Time is a human construct dude. Sunday doesn't exist. Watch a football game or do not. Nothing matters.
