Is this capitalism?

The UK’s identity system is chaotic. A new report says it's costing us money, rights and trust. Stephen McNair asks if this is the most quietly transformative idea in British politics. Have a look ⤵️

Award-winning scientist, Andrea Sella, has returned his Royal Society award in protest over the Society's continued apathy over Elon Musk. My latest substack in which I make the case that we need more scientists like Andrea, who are prepared to take a stand: open.substack.com/pu...

The UK government should long ago have exited X. The platform is not interested in appropriate moderation. It is a hotbed for extremism. This was clear nearly a year ago during the riots.

Russia systematically beats, tortures, rapes, and kills its prisoners. This is a monstrously violent regime.

Despite warnings about rising sea levels and the "intergenerational obscenity" of nuclear waste, Sizewell C has been approved. The emotion of those fighting for Suffolk's Heritage Coast is clear. Rachel Fulcher tells of the powerful reasons behind it.

The new art of the deal: the content is less than clear, implementation is unclear and by the time one of the parties is ready to implement the fundamentals have shifted anyways.

⚡️ Russia’s nuclear deterrent against US not 'significantly' affected by Ukraine’s Operation Spiderweb, official claims. "Our nuclear deterrence potential against the U.S. and any other potential adversary has not suffered significant damage," Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said.

“Analysis” easier, cheaper to produce. Normalization of GOP extremism, particularly Trump’s, into a typical understanding of politics frees them from grappling with the stark reality. They don’t have to confront the larger problem or deviate from their standard set of descriptors of his actions.

“Wild Virginia is taking several actions to insist that government officials properly use their authorities to identify sources of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and prevent their release to the environment.”

😎

Earlier this year, we reported on chemical industry lobbying to prevent regulation of PFAS forever chemicals on a scale "far bigger than anything the tobacco industry have been able to pull together." Today, we report on the latest tactic in this deadly strategy: www.theguardian.com/environment/...

To recap: There are 10,000+ PFAS. Some are toxic. They're here forever. They pollute water, air, soils, animals and you. Some linked to diseases inc cancers. So when scientists warn against moves to redefine them, we'd better hope people are listening: www.theguardian.com/environment/...

The chemical industry is deploying every weapon in its arsenal to fight efforts to regulate harmful forever chemicals, including calling into question the very definition of what PFAS are, writes Watershed's @rachelsalvidge.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Note: the author of the article, Daniel Pipes, runs an org, ‘the Middle East Forum’, to launder anti-Muslim propaganda, which has, for example, materially supported Tommy Robinson (a UK far-right anti-Muslim extremist) and extremist politician Geert Wilders. Pipes doesn’t give a shit about Jews!

Slightly concerning.

Listen to me and Huw discuss the only veteran of the Irish Revolution who became an in-house astrologer for the 1960s west coast counter culture + also the only person with a death notice in both the San Francisco gay press and the Kerryman newspaper. Available wherever you get your podcasts!

Leaked FSB documents show that Russia’s leadership, while publicly promoting a “no-limits” partnership with China, is deeply distrustful of Beijing’s intentions, viewing it as both a security and territorial threat behind closed doors. Allies in public, enemies in secret!🤡

ICE agents concealing their faces: Can they really do that?

this is good

It is genuinely impressively to be so disliked that 35,000 bar members bother to vote in a bar election, which ranks somewhere below dentist visit in list of fun stuff to do.

This Is Not Normal

Very surprised not to see Reform UK represented on BBC2's Springwatch.

Reform in Redditch are claiming that they have saved the taxpayer almost £46,000 by having one fewer cabinet member than the previous administration on Worcestershire County Council. An official council spokesperson tells me: "There were 10 Cabinet members previously...and 10 Cabinet members now."

If you think climate change has gotten worse during your lifetime, you're right and there's a good reason. If you're Gen X like me, more than 3/4 of fossil fuel CO₂ emissions have occurred in your lifetime. Even if you're a Millennial, it's at least half. 📊: @neilrkaye.bsky.social

An LAPD helicopter claimed to have ID'ed protesters from above and threatened to "come to your house." The threat was greeted with extreme concern by civil liberties and digital privacy groups. It suggests the LAPD could be using facial recognition to identify and retaliate against protesters.

🚨🚨 #Abortion: Europe’s not as liberal as you think. While the global focus is on America’s reversal of long-standing abortion rights, a surprising number of European women still have to travel to terminate pregnancies. Great long @politico.eu read summarised in 🧵 www.politico.eu/article/abor...

CNN reporter Jason Carroll was detained on live TV and his security team arrested in Los Angeles. Is this democracy, press freedom, free speech?

Setting aside the implausibly high number, wonder if actually most people would prefer a government that protected them from AI making it even harder to actually speak to humans about whatever they're trying to achieve...

Sooner or later, all Republicans will realize what all Europeans know: Trump is a Russian asset.

“Reform Chairmen, sir. Thousands of them. Joining up, deserting when it gets tough, then coming back again.”

I can’t help but watch Sarah Vine’s book publicity tour like a slow motion car crash. This interview (£) has some fascinating nuggets about the Cameron era and a real sadness for friendships (and marriages) as a casualty of the quest for power. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

Jeremy Bowen's long, measured, objective, but ultimately entirely clear and conclusive essay on Israeli war crimes. As Jonathan Sumption puts it: "These things make genocide the most plausible explanation for what is now happening." www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Literally two weeks ago Stephen Miller screamed at ICE leadership for not raiding Home Depots.

A 'Liz Truss moment' has now entered the lexicon as a short hand for a self-inflicted economic disaster. Well done Liz, a truly historic premiership.

The rationale for sending troops to big blue California is the same for going after Harvard and Columbia: if you can subdue your wealthiest and most powerful enemies first, the rest will fall more easily.

Day 1201 of Europe's war. But the pre-conflict hybrid war has already been waging worldwide for years. Hacking, election interference, sabotage - we're all targeted by Russia, even if we don't all realise it yet. Ukraine can stop the war criminal with our help. Welcome to THE daily 🧵for Sunday..
