More land animals than ever before are slaughtered for meat

#greensky

A major point of our current late stage capitalism seems to be absurdly, but with a straight face (pun intended), to use democracy as “proof” that people don’t want democracy. Meaningless as an Ouroboros. “This machine didn’t go mad. It was mad from the beginning.” (Deleuze, Chaosophy)

Just 10 of the 195 countries signed up to the landmark Paris Agreement have published their new emissions-cutting plans. Those missing the 10th Feb deadline represent 83% of global emissions and nearly 80% of the world’s economy, according to @carbonbrief.org @daisydunne.carbonbrief.org analysis.

That’s what they really want. This time around the [inevitable] Revolution will demand the abolition of all unelected kings, from CEOs all the way down the pyramid. While we’re at it, we can also abolish elections and have government / legislature selected by lottery (aka sortition).

Science is political. It wouldn't necessarily have to be partisan. But when one party is opposed to science-based policy, scientists have a choice between saying "you're right, thoughts and prayers are probably as effective as reducing carbon emissions" or saying "fuck that."

This is some bombshell, scandelous, spy-novel-esque news in the climate space: It’s alledged that a lobbying firm representing ExxonMobil engaged in hacking and targeting 128 climate activists and/or environmental organizations involved in climate ligation to discredit those individuals/groups.

Spiralling global temperatures: 2024 edition

Cannot stop thinking about how Octavia Butler wrote a book in 1993 about climate change. It opens with deadly fires in LA in 2025. In the story, a fascist President has just won office with the campaign slogan "Make America Great Again." She was a modern day Nostradamus. If only we'd listened.

Because of course it did. Is it time yet to admit that profiting (and so also private investing and tax-breaking) our way out of ecological crisis is impossible? We need systemic, paradigmatic change. #degrowth #greensky

It’s absurd that this even needs to be said but it needs to be said. I would add that subsidies for FF are an important reason why we need #degrowth. The insane, ecocidal quest for FF produced wealth is a feature of the Capitalocene, not a bug.

Believing that we *need* a capitalist, growth-oriented solution to the ecological crisis is the final frontier of denialism. #greensky #degrowth

I have to constantly resist the urge to ask for sources here... Hmmm, maybe I am in that phase of academia (similar to art) where I need to unlearn everything now…? Or maybe I don’t know what socials are for? lol, help! #academicsky #phdsky

This a fabulous teaching aide!

This is quite insightful and highly applicable to North America too. The idea of critiquing the narrative of too “early” transitions from fossil fuels is one of the most pernicious forms of soft-denial there is. #greensky

There is the larger argument to be made that there is no ethical accumulation of wealth, of any amount, under capitalism; even the passive investing in an index fund is dependent on the choices billionaires make upstream. Much depends on where one draws the line (probably below billionaire status).

Yep. #degrowth is fundamentally about the need for socio-ecological justice precisely because there is more than enough money already if a few rich maniacs weren’t insanely hoarding it. The richest received more than 60% of new wealth created since 2020. The story of growth is the story of madness.

I hate to repost this highly misogynist meme but I want to highlight what @ianbassin.bsky.social is saying. This is not business as usual.

the world is coming together to tackle plastic devastation. but plastics are fossil fuels. and fossil fuel companies are... well, doing their thing... youtu.be/r0bteSnqVEo

I freaking love this.

OK, OK, echo chambers are suddenly a concern of the right because BlueSky is taking off but the right also thinks ACADEMIA is an echo chamber… so, yeah, not sure it’s a valid concern that we need to worry about in any rigorous sense, heh. #AcademicSky

COP29 is into overtime, with small island states & least developed nations walking out of the proposed financing deal and news that negotiating text was hand-edited by a member of the Saudi energy ministry. More here: www.dw.com/en/cop29-cli... and here: www.theguardian.com/environment/...

An IPCC lead author's verdict on #COP29. Rarely has something of which so little was expected under-delivered by this much. What a shit show.

The lunacy of this project is something else. Almost certainly much more CO2 avoided sending all the wind farms energy to Texas’s grid than this carbon capture facility. Too boot, Texas’s (growing) demand is off the charts and 60% powered by fossil fuels. Par for the carbon capture course.

Funny/not-funny how white cis-male (like me, to be clear) “environmentalists” too often, in a gross mansplain-y way, say things like “overpopulation is the problem” and there is a “technology gap” and basically anything besides the desperate need for socio-ecological justice (e.g. via #degrowth)

Disinformation poses a great risk to achieving climate goals. The just-launched Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change led by the United Nations, @unesconow.bsky.social, & Brazil will fund research & action promoting information integrity. www.un.org/en/climatech...

Rich people wanting lower taxes but trying to sell that as being good for the collective is a bit of ***amazing*** spin

This website tracks fossil fuel profits. And yes, its as gross as you think. Never ever let anyone say that we “can’t afford” meaningful climate action. It’s perhaps the biggest lie ever told. Make. Polluters. Pay. #greensky #degrowth energy-profits.org

Please remember, the climate COP meetings are DESIGNED to fail. It is not a bug, but a feature. Here's how they could be designed to succeed. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

👇🏼This is a common BlueSky question with a simple answer, having created 6 feeds for energy-related topics here: Feeds ‘catch’ post keywords the feed designer selects & omits capture for other keywords. Eg: if you say EV, V2G, V2H, electric vehicle, bi-directional charging, my EV feed picks it up.
