6) Spin it as you will, the US did not green light the Russian invasion. Ukraine did not invade Russia.

5) Trump's loss in 2020 was probably not seen as a great setback because Biden was discounted as being too enfeebled, both physically and politically. Ukraine was not seen as a difficult task and nobody would effectively resist.
Of course, they underestimated Biden, NATO, and Ukraine.
