Politicians who oppose action on net zero will make their constituents poorer by driving up energy bills, Britainā€™s climate chief has warned critics. www.thetimes.com/uk/environme...

Instead of raising money for defence via tax on the wealthy or speculative financial transactions this "is balancing the books courtesy of the poorest people in the world. This will not make the world a safer and more prosperous place. The exact opposite in fact." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Tesla lost enough value today that it could have fully funded USAID for a year.

Trump's "anti-trans sadism ...should not only offend us because it is cruel. It should offend us because it demands that govt depts, federally funded institutions, and people who work for them participate in a lie: that trans people are not who they say they are." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

UK "military capabilities must be strengthened ... But cutting aid to fund it is a fundamental strategic error that risks making us weaker, not stronger. Funding one out of money allocated to the other risks undermining the very security we are trying to ensure." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Aid has been cut from 0.5% to 0.3% of GNI; but billions go on in-country asylum costs, not overseas. "Even if these costs were halved ... UK would still only be spending 0.23% GNI on aid, the lowest ever share of national income since records began in 1960." www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

ā€œIf we stop, they will die,ā€ auditors wrote. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Word of the Day is ā€˜ingordigiousnessā€™ (18th century): extreme greed at the expense of principles.

Commenting on Government plans to cut aid spendingĀ from 0.5% of GDP to 0.3% in 2027 to fund an increase in defence budget, @gredmondking.bsky.social, @eciu.net said: "We import two fifths of our food from overseas, much of which we simply canā€™t grow here in the UK" Ā eciu.net/media/press...

Nice from @stephenkb.bsky.social on how sticking to what polls/focus groups tell you risks inflicting a worse version of what people in those polls/focus groups fear by way of higher costs! Sometimes we need leaders to lead, not follow, and take genuinely (not superficially) difficult decisions.

As Trump pursues Project 2025's blueprint to rip apart institutions like NOAA and NASA, relied upon and renowned around the globe, ā€œthe UK has some of the best academic institutions in the world so thereā€™s a huge opportunity to harness any influx of talent." www.thetimes.com/us/business/...

As Trump cuts USAID, climate impacts worsen, and COP29 agreed to treble climate finance, the UK cuts its already diminished aid budget. Aid and climate finance can be life and death for struggling communities AND are in our interests, protecting food security. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

So we're just ceding global soft power to China and Russia then? Seems like a great way to make us safer.

Marks & Spencer says it's committed to taking action to "reflect the climate emergency we all face". Meanwhile they advertise on GB News, which spreads climate misinformation & denial. šŸ‘‰šŸ‘‰šŸ‘‰ actionstorm.org/petitions/ma... (follow @stopfundingheat.bsky.social for more on this)

Coren is a nasty piece of work. And what is any national newspaper doing carrying a piece egging on violent robbers?!

Jaw-dropping. "US votes against UN resolution condemning Russia for Ukraine war" [voting] "with Russia, North Korea, Belarus and 14 other Moscow-friendly countries." www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

While the UK economy grew less than one per cent last year, the net zero economy was growing 10 per cent. Lots of very serious people will continue to argue one of the only sources of growth is apparently bad news. www.businessgreen.com/news/4409826...

"The US government is withdrawing grants and other support for research that even references the climate crisis, academics have said, amid Donald Trumpā€™s blitzkrieg upon environmental regulations and clean-energy development." www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I wrote about Mitch McConnellā€™s retirement, and how his career eroded American democracy. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

"Whenever you see a horror of anti-democratic rule ā€“ cronyism rewarded over competence, cruelty inflicted over dignity, the constitution flouted, mocked, treated as annoyance to be ignored by men with no respect for the law or for you, remember Mitch McConnell." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The UK's net zero economy grew 10% in 2024, generating Ā£83bn in gross value added. 22,000 net zero businesses employ almost a million people (FTE); with average annual wages Ā£5,600 higher than the national average. Net zero = good for jobs and growth! www.theguardian.com/environment/...

"Someone needs to ask the awkward question. And in formulating an answer they should start with geography. European and British security are indivisible. They always have been." Fantastic piece by @philipstephens.bsky.social:

Despite claiming to love his country, Nigel Farageā€™s silence on Trump, Putin and Ukraine shows where his loyalties really lie www.adambienkov.co.uk/p/agent-farage

Immigration is good for the economy, proves booming Spain. Oh and: "other factors are also at play. Spainā€™s abundance of wind and solar renewables has helped keep energy relatively cheap..." Proper leadership, not pandering to the far-right. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

57% of Americans say Trump has exceeded his authority since taking office. Doubt he or his boss will care, though... and they have at least two years not to care, with control of all branches of government. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Trump and Musk damaging their own country with their assault on their own government. "...efforts to dismantle USAID ... has left American workers in limbo and threatens billions of dollars the agency spends on American businesses and organisations" www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Extreme weather events are expected to lead to volatile food prices throughout 2025, supply chain analysts have said, after cocoa and coffee prices more than doubled over the past year. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

"Poorer countries want rapid emission cuts & more financial help in face of Trumpā€™s stance ... 'prioritising adaptation for ... agriculture, water, management of natural resources, food security & nutrition.'ā€ Crucial to us too; UK imports two-fifths of our food. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

A test of whether Trump heads a cult in thrall to his power, or an actual government: will representatives whose constituents have benefited from billions in clean energy investment vote with Trump to ditch that, or will they vote for their voters' best interests? www.ft.com/content/e627...

Here's WHY China invests so much in clean energy - because it's good for growth: "Clean energy contributed a record 10% of Chinaā€™s GDPin 2024 ... with sales and investments worth 13.6tn yuan ($1.9tn), the sector has now overtaken real estate sales in value." www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

The world's glaciers are melting faster than ever recorded under the impact of climate change, according to the most comprehensive scientific analysis to date. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

*extremely ā€˜I write editorial comment for the FTā€™ voice*. Completely agree with this and also feel like itā€™s in part a manifestation of how UK has turned inwards. Even much of the political class seems unaware of how important and significant all this is for UK prosperity and security.

It irritates me no end that itā€™s always liberals who are dismissed as being ā€œout of touchā€ with ā€œreal peopleā€. Liberals are much more in touch with the public mood than the reactionary right, whether itā€™s on race, same-sex relationships, or abortion rights. We should start saying so more boldly.

One for the ā€˜but what about Chinaā€™ brigade: ā€œChina invested 6.8 trillion yuan ($940 billion) in clean energy in 2024, approaching the $1.12 trillion in global investment in fossil fuels, according to a new analysis for Carbon Brief.ā€ www.reuters.com/world/china/...

As Trump ditches climate action, @netzerotracker.bsky.social figure global net-zero-target coverage fell from 93% to 78%. BUT 19 US states have net zero pledges; 8 more have 80%+ emission cut targets. Those 27 account for two-thirds of the US economy, and bring global net zero coverage up to 84%.

ā€œItā€™s extremely odd to lecture Europe on ... free speech and democracy at the same time as cuddling Mr Putin.
