I can’t say I ever expected enough to be disappointed.
I’ve questioned his judgement ever since I saw this photo—i know that’s a long time ago, but not long enough.

National Guard troops are under control of state governors. The president can federalize the guard—as was done by JFK in 1963–but I think it requires a little more than having your unconfirmed non-cabinet henchman going on Fox to claim he’s deputizing troops for domestic protest suppression.

In newsrooms I’ve worked, there is (rightfully) pressure to add context to developing stories to show how one event is better understood if you keep history & systems in mind. Sometimes that’s hard to do when you have to turn around 800 words in 20 mins. But when you have months to make 6 epies…. 😠

When I said (as I’ve been doing for years) “pandemic fatalism is a privilege,” I was warning against active apathy in the face of a contagious, deadly virus. Apparently, the fatalism is even more infectious.

Funny enough, I’ve heard this same sort of relativism a lot during the last, let’s say, 5 years and 3 months, often right before brunch.

I think that’s wise.
(I intentionally did not make it a gift article.)

I also once saw an obscure band called Journey open for Emerson, Lake & Palmer, but you know what? Not the best.

🤔The Blasters opening for X at the Starwood.
🤔The Go-Go’s (with Margot on bass) opening for X at the Whiskey.
🤔The Bangles opening for The Beat at Cole Field House, U. Maryland.
🤔The B-52s opening for Talking Heads at the Greek.

I expect all serious Democrats running for national office to include a plan to reform and expand the Supreme Court in their campaign platform.
I also expect to be disappointed.

A couple of weeks ago, I was having a conversation with another politically aware New Yorker about why Jessica Ramos has never really moved up in NYC’s progressive political pecking order. The conclusion: nobody trusts her.
Case in point (click thru to see the repost, too):

And for what? It’s not like any of them truly believe mRNA tech is actually dangerous, they just see a weakness they can exploit for political and financial gain.

For sure. I mean, many more folks than god know, actually.

I’m just playin’—but as I half-joked in 2016, what if, way in the future, we learn that the only thing that was true in the Steele Dossier was the pee tape?

What if… and hear me out here… what if Elmo bought the pee tape off Vlad? YesNoMaybeSo?

This is the context I was hoping to see in this story, & the context too often missing from US reporting on Israel’s brutality in Gaza. Bibi spent decades building up Hamas as a foil to the PA. Now he’s hoping to build a foil to Hamas. This only ends in more death on all sides; Bibi is fine w/ that.

Related: the Trump admin’s response to the Boulder attack was to round up the suspect’s wife and five children and attempt to immediately deport them. Late Wednesday, a US District Court judge halted that deportation.

Let it be noted that among all of the Democratic candidates for mayor of NYC, only Michael Blake approved of the New York Knicks firing Tom Thibodeau.

Jesus. We are less than a month out from the election, and when asked who they would rank number two, none of the left flank of this panel had an answer.
Use moments like this to teach voters how to use Ranked Choice Voting, FFS.

There are people in this world who are just pathologically incapable of answering a question with anything that can be nailed down—even when there is an easy and obvious answer. Andrew Cuomo is one of those people.

"The bagel I try to stay away from, to keep my girlish figure."
What year is this? 1967? What kind of groping dinosaur says that kind of thing anymore? Especially one running for office; especially one who has a bit of a, um, history of being a groping dinosaur.

I am assuming the EPA’s AirNow site/app will keep working this season—maybe that’s a big assumption, but it can be a very useful tool.
Trust me, particulate pollution is hell on your lungs. An ounce of protection is worth a pound of coughing and wheezing.

Nothing will improve until we’re willing to face COVID head on.
That means admitting that “back to normal” isn’t working.
That adaptation is necessary for survival.
That clean air, paid time off, respirators and vaccines are all needed to drive transmission down and save lives.

When you’re lonely—whether or not you have an obvious role in that situation—it’s hard to underestimate the allure of belonging to some group, be it an actual collective or a mental construct.
And then needing to maintain the belonging becomes a goal in itself.
