"I will no longer be able to continue teaching." Hyeongseon Jeon, an assistant professor at the University of Houston, said he had his foreign visa unexpectedly terminated and now must return to Korea immediately. www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston...

“Long term, a lack of staff to oversee the allocation of LIHEAP funds could severely compromise the program’s existence,” said @carleysanya.bsky.social of the Kleinman Center.

Wildfires don’t just burn land—they threaten and challenge water systems. #UCLA’s new Urban Water Supply + Fire working group, led by @gregspierce.bsky.social, is tackling this critical intersection head-on w/ funding from CWRI. Read more: innovation.luskin.ucla.edu/2025/04/08/l... #UCLALuskin

this is wild: vehicle capacity of freeway lanes dropped 10 percent as SUVs took over the road -- not just bc they are bigger. they also take more time and space to slow down and obscure other drivers' sightlines. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

In today’s @latimes.com print edition: A bill from CA Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas would put a six-year pause on clean energy standards for new homes and appliances. Every Democrat in the Assembly voted for it, for some reason, even the climate champions. My column: www.latimes.com/environment/...

💯 but not sure this is an accident?

I agree that China is rapidly accelerating clean energy buildout - but! I do not think "abnormally high temps reducing hydro capacity" counts as an anomaly in the context of worsening climate change. We can predict with great certainty that climate change itself will make decarb much harder. (1/3)

You pretty much had me at "Greetings and don't be tired, dear professor" But I was 100% on board when I got to "Due to lack of time, I have not yet"

3 days ago RFK Jr. told the CDC to stop recommending water fluoridation, claiming it was a neurotoxin (this is a lie). Turns out he also just eliminated the CDC’s entire Lead Program, and now lead poisoned children in Milwaukee are just on their own. Lead IS a neurotoxin and harms brain development

The direction of the administration re: emergency management is becoming clear. Let us tour the changes to the hazard mitigation plan process. #1 - no longer need to document engagement with representatives of NGOs or CBOs working with underserved communities and socially vulnerable populations.

Literally no coverage on this until the last few days, but very important: The cost of new, compliant onsite wastewater treatment (OWTS~septic) in fire affected areas of Malibu may be as much or more than connecting to new sewer. Both are incredibly expensive. malibutimes.com/a-once-in-a-...

You know I’ve liked paying less for water and am still enjoying my showers. If the ‘water barely comes out’ you might have a plumbing problem www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/...

Thank you to @gregspierce.bsky.social @mullinmeg.bsky.social and the whole team @luskininnovation.bsky.social for welcoming me as an affiliated scholar. Excited for more water/fire work to come!

Please join us in welcoming Camille Burrus to our research team. With expertise in environmental health and community-based research, she'll contribute to transformative climate initiatives across California. Learn more about her: innovation.luskin.ucla.edu/2025/03/14/w... #UCLA #UCLALuskin

Thrilled to be leading this w @fkearns.bsky.social, @edithdeguzman.bsky.social and Erik Porse. Thanks to the UCLA Climate and Wildfire Initiative @uclasustainablela.bsky.social for enabling this work. Look forward to collaborating w many folks here and welcome your ideas!

What are the potential local water (equity) impacts of "Green Hydrogen" for Energy Transition efforts in LA/CA? Michael Rincon (joint @psr-la.bsky.social), @laurendunlap.bsky.social & I took a look in a @luskininnovation.bsky.social exploratory report. innovation.luskin.ucla.edu/exploring-th...

IMO the most interesting finding we had here was getting beyond access to functional cooling usage. @destenie.bsky.social et al. have found suppressed usage due to affordability burden, but here we also find equipment (AC unit) failures limiting cooling protections.

Our new paper in @urbanstudiesonline.com examines thermal inequities for US manufactured housing residents due to (1) less central AC access, (2) more AC breakdowns & (3) greater energy burdens. Terrific collaboration w/ @gregspierce.bsky.social, Matt Barnett & Sara Hughes. doi.org/10.1177/0042...

Liquefaction is a phenomenon where water saturated ground (usually sandy ground) loses strength and behaves like a liquid during earthquakes. The M7.7 earthquake in Myanmar caused widespread liquefaction. 🧪⚒️

Because parks flooded during Hurricane Helene, 1135 mobile homeowners across Pinellas County are facing the same determination. A substantially damaged home will either have to be relocated or elevated to current flood elevations, which is "near impossible." www.abcactionnews.com/news/region-...

1 in 8 Californians live in the most dangerous wildfire zones. After the L.A. fires, updated hazard maps show “we are living in a new reality of extremes." grist.org/wildfires/ca... #CA #California #Insurance #Wildfire #Climate

Cheers to my UCLA & @nrdc.org colleagues on this work. Recycled water is the by far the biggest "new" water source available in the West, and despite good CA run on snowpack (see Ian's other article today) and whatever may be agreed to on existing imported supplies, is urgent.

This is not an exaggeration: illegally gutting this program will cause Americans to freeze to death in their homes.

apparently, clean water is woke

The Salton Sea may finally be seeing real momentum toward restoration but @gregspierce.bsky.social cautions: lithium riches alone won’t save it. Local communities must benefit or risk being left behind. Read more in @usatoday.com: www.usatoday.com/story/news/n... #UCLA #UCLALuskin

If you're at the California-Nevada Section American Water Works Association conference next week, check out the full slate of speakers we have talking about wildfire-water supply impacts. Reflecting on experiences in LA, Wrightwood, Colorado and more.

“We have to be able to undertake some major reforms that we haven’t been willing to do before,” @gregspierce.bsky.social told @gristnews.bsky.social. New wildfire hazard maps reflect urgent realities revealed in the aftermath of CA's fires. Read more: grist.org/wildfires/ca... #UCLA #UCLALuskin

Greg is too kind, but yes, I am here now! (However belatedly). Always happy to chat at the intersection of water, rurality, and justice.

Nice overview work by @brookings.edu. Biggest thing to me is that even with IIJA (and a bit of IRA), local share of infrastructure spend still > slightly in 2020-2023 v. 2010s. ~ Even the "down payment" IIJA narrative may have been overstated for water sector. www.brookings.edu/articles/fou...

Hey look another major CA fire department needing ways to find revenue that have nothing to do with actual firefighting service. We should really connect revenue to service for FDs, and make sure FDs have time to provide their original mandate. www.mercurynews.com/2025/03/26/s...
