Turning the American system of government into a personalist regime where funding is arbitrarily granted or withheld depending on the whims of the leader and his apparatchiks

Stop defining Trump defying the Supreme Court as the red line. He is a lawless tyrant *right now*. He is failing to comply with court orders *right now*. He is violating the Constitution and the law *right now*. We're past all the red lines.

Deported without due process into a foreign gulag

Seemingly lawless act that harms Americans who have or need kidney transplants and undermines our ability to recruit the best and brightest people in the world to study and work here Doctor and Professor Is Deported Despite a Judge’s Order www.nytimes.com/2025/03/16/u...

Jeesh. Reason number five million *not* to put anyone's fate in the hands of Tesla's automated systems. Worth watching all the way through.

I strongly suspect this recent piece from Prof. David Knoll is about to be come extremely relevant and widely read. "Even a rogue marshal’s service, in other words, is not an insurmountable obstacle to courts enforcing the rule of law. If courts have the courage, the legal tools are there."

If I’m thinking thru the senate rules right (by no means certain), I think a single D senator can force the voting that’s starts tomorrow to last into the beginning of next week by refusing unanimous consent. That can slow things down and allow the backlash to expand.

Just called Senator Merkley's office asking him to deny unanimous consent. His interview earlier today indicated that he gets it. Let's see if he is really earnest about standing up to tyrants as early as possible. If you have a no on cloture Senator, perhaps call them to deny unanimous consent.

a good way to see whether there is one senator who's really reader for a fight here

Too much is at stake not to keep up the pressure on the Senate Democrats up to the very moment of the vote.

these people swore an oath to defend the constitution but i guess that’s just too hard

And maybe pigs will fly

Call your senators and let them know if they join Schumer here you will never give them another dime or another vote and you’ll devote your time and money to anyone who primaries them.

Co-signing this. Time for Schumer to go spend more time with his family. Let’s get a real leader in the Senate.

I have to say: Chuck Schumer is a weak man and a fool. This was the one cudgel Dems had. Now it's up to the courts which we new from the beginning were at best going to slow some things down. There's 18 hours left to somehow bring additional pressure to bear. It will be really hard to do that.

Voters respect strength. They respect conviction. They respect having a backbone. You know what they don't respect? Weakness. Fear. Avoidance.

It’s time for new leadership, Democrats. Full stop.

This meme is going viral among Democrats.

I just cancelled my recurring donations to the @dscc.bsky.social after watching @schumer.senate.gov and the Senate Democrats give up the best leverage they had to stop Trump's law breaking without a fight. What a bunch of incompetent dipshits. They're useless.

This is wrong on the merits. If the great majority of the Senate Dems REALLY think they need to block the CR, as they claim, they need to make clear to their leader.

Look I’m a normie and pretty moderate Dem in most respects, but - *assuming reports are true* - any Senate Dem who votes for this needs to be fired straight into the sun Not “they should get primaried in 2-6 years,” I mean “immediately resign in disgrace”

If the Senate Democrats do this, yes, it’s a massive betrayal of their base and an unconscionable abdication of their duty. Every single one of them who’s complicit in this scheme needs to be driven out of politics forever.

The word for what Senate Democrats are doing right now is "betrayal." Not only are they voluntarily surrendering the only leverage they have, the leverage they have spent months promising to use against Trump, they're doing it while lying and pretending they want the opposite.

OMG @schumer.senate.gov, you might as well retire now. If you won't stand up for Congressional power, you're pointless anyways. Talk about relegating yourself into irrelevance. Assuming we have a Republic in 2028, don't bother running. You're going to get primaried and you're going to lose.

THANK YOU @jeff-merkley.bsky.social !!

Too many pundits are missing just how apoplectic the Democratic base is right now. They revile Trump. Revile Musk. They see the economy collapsing. They see DOGE wrecking livelihoods. If Senate Dems don’t stand up and say enough is enough, this party is at a breaking point.

People REALLY need to stop thinking in terms of elections. The window to start reversing Trump is much shorter. Agnostic in how that affects shutdown. But this should not be abt 2026.

I literally just got off the phone with @wyden.senate.gov's Portland office and was told the same. Very disappointing after his strong statements about being a no on the CR itself. I hope he stands up and votes no on cloture as well. If you're an Oregonian, call now (503) 326-7525 or (202) 224-5244.

How to get me to immediately buy a book I had already been thinking about buying: www.reuters.com/legal/met…

Real talk: Senate Democrats set clear red lines. None were met. They were shut out of negotiations on a bill that needs their votes. They have real leverage, yet don’t appear to be using it. What’s the strategy? Because right now they look completely adrift.

Does feel like there's no more than 24 hrs left for constituents to make their views clear to senators. Get contrary signals. But the ones this afternoon make me think Senate Dems are moving into throwing up their hands mode. Seemed different this morning. Maybe playacting for constituents.

Hey remember when people said “we need a domestic terrorism statute” and people like me said “that would be super ripe for abuse for whatever lunatic is in power, would you want Trump to have that power” and you sneered at “slippery slope thinking”? Yeah, I remember, dipshit.

This is a grave and sobering admission: they are not pursuing the “WELL ACTUALLY he broke the law during protests,” they are bragging that they are deporting people for protected speech.

“trump and white house officials have been telling GOP holdouts that they will take their constitutional power to make spending decisions”

Is musk a scam?

Good morning. Can someone point me to the thread where we’re consolidating all of our complaints about daylight savings time shifts? I have some thoughts.

Wow, Congrats, Trump on torching NATO. Now we’ve got Poland deciding to build its own nukes.

They are realizing that bar discipline and disbarment are real possibilities for abusing the legal process, so they are subverting these enforcement mechanisms also

Doug Ford is standing up in the way not a single GOP/quisling member of the US Senate dares to. (Although I note that Sen. Collins remains "concerned.")

During one of my earliest professional projects, I encountered a progress bar that was, as the engineering team put it, “complete nonsense.” Here’s how it worked, why it worked that way, and the more honest alternatives it inspired: cloudfour.com/thinks/truth... #UX #UI #Design

In what sense do we have a Constitution if the executive can just pick and choose which laws to enforce?

For those who have signed up for Flashes, have you experimented with setting up a separate account vs using your main Bluesky one?
