Carl Sagan explains how the ancient Greeks knew the Earth was round and calculated its circumference over 2,000 years ago.

Palestine is the litmus test of our age.

Farage is talking bollocks again. But now @ed-miliband.bsky.social is calling him out. There is no politician more geekishly knowledgeable about our energy system than Ed. We need geeks like him to keep the lights on, not Trumpist blowhards like Farage www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I heard some loud squawking from the rookery and saw one Great Blue Heron chasing another. With so many Great Blue Herons (30+) in close proximity, disagreements seem to pop up every once in a while. They get worked out by the birds flying around for a bit.

Beware of zonal electricity pricing. Will increase energy industry profits; higher cost for consumers in congested areas; profiteering = less incentive to innovate; make some industries less competitive; increase regional inequalities; deter regional mobility. Ofgem not protecting people.

The Everglades has lost half its original size. Fertilizer runoff and saltwater intrusion are overwhelming what’s left. Once a buffer, the wetlands can no longer protect water quality—or themselves. theconversation.com/25-years-of-...

We did mention we had news? We've just acquired all of the Sheanadh Gharráin woods east of the Bhoth Loiscthe River in the Connemara Gaeltacht. 35 acres of rainforest awesomeness are now protected, plus 47 acres of space for them to stretch into !

Support for independence in Scotland is rising rapidly. There is a UK political crisis brewing as a result. Westminster might think it has the right to rule Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland forever. It's increasingly likely that they do not agree. www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/04...

🔥 Europe has been named the fastest-warming continent by @wmo-global.bsky.social. This comes as our own @metoffice.bsky.social warns the UK is headed for its worst year for wildfires on record. There is no financial stability on a burning planet. Regulators must stop banks funding fossil fuels.

It’s always “what’s in it for us”—we measure wildlife by its utility. It’s unthinkable that nature has intrinsic value beyond our selfish interests. apple.news/A-JMts7SBSV2...

"We're one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world and wildfires every spring at the worst possible time is a burden that wildlife and the environment just can't cope with." - @inccymru.bsky.social www.bbc.com/news/article...

Striking east-west contrast as extreme heat and flooding mark Europe’s warmest year

With Labour copying the Tories, and with the far right on the rise, independence can't come soon enough. If Scotland had the powers of a normal independent country we could do far more for people and planet.

organ pipe mud dauber wasp nests at our friend Randy's house. he thinks these gorgeous, non-aggressive wasps are pretty cool so he leaves them alone. let's all be like Randy 👏🏽👏🏽 #organpipemuddauberwasp #Trypoxylonpolitum #Crabronidae

So much happening in this photo. Newly hatched sawfly larvae make quick work of skeletonizing a leaf. Nearby, a group of sawfly eggs are nearly bursting with larvae ready to emerge.

A Norfolk aquarium firm and a Diss-based glassmaker were caught up in a bizarre US trade blunder – leaving a Pacific island facing a 29% tariff, despite having no trade with America at all. Here’s what happened | Owen Sennitt @eastangliabylines.co.uk @owensennitt.bsky.social

“A Sad Day for Photographers in the US | Cameras and Photography Explained | Thom Hogan” bythom.com/newsviews/a-... It's always a bit interesting to see analysis of the tariff effects from the perspective if a single industry. All bad, though.

Adult in the room. "Will China kiss Donald Trump's ass?" "No China will never do that." "Donald Trump should really learn how to be a better President." "His actions will only build resentment, especially among his allies."

We're blowing up your house built on your land that we are illegally occupying because of something a relative of yours did. The only democracy in the middle east, dontcha' know.

BREAKING: Trump today issued his most unhinged, illegal Executive Order yet. It orders federal agencies to "sunset" nearly all U.S. enviromental regulations implementing everything from the Endangered Species Act to the Safe Drinking Water Act. @biologicaldiversity.org will sue the second he tries.

Kinda flying under the radar: Donald Trump signed a new EO on April 8 directing his government to “expeditiously” take action to “stop the enforcement of State laws” designed to reduce “greenhouse gas” emissions. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

UK govt considering nationalising British Steel. Better than handing billions of free money to private foreign companies. Can't succeed without ending profiteering by energy water sectors, which inflates industry cost. If steel can be nationalised why not water and energy. They are essential too.

Tax cut for Musk, Bezos and other tech billionaires on the table, Starmer confirms. NO. People suffering cuts in benefits; NHS queues; crumbling infrastructure whilst the richest rewarded. Mustn't capitulate to Trump's bullying. archive.ph/AjYc7

Question: Suppose Israel kills N Palestinians tomorrow. What is the number N beyond which Western leaders will cry "Enough!" and do something tangible to stop Israel? At this stage it looks as if N tends to infinity (or, its Gaza equivalent, 2.2 mil) www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/4/...

Excessive human activity on the world's longest sea beach — Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh — is destroying the coastal ecosystem, leading to a slow disappearance of the once-common morning glory vine that was once prolific in the area. But their existence here is critical to the stability of the sandbar.

Next on the table, Chlorinated Chicken and Hormone Beef.

Starmer needs to realise that we're in 2025 not 2017

Last year @georgemonbiot.bsky.social wrote for us about Labour’s enthusiastically inherited plans for carbon capture. Now, we’ve started legal action to challenge their £10bn subsidy for a carbon capture plant in Teesside: goodlaw.social/9sgq

🚨NEW🚨 Wes Streeting has bagged another £58,000 from sources connected to the private health sector since taking over at the health department. 👀 But what do his backers expect in return? goodlawproject.org/health-secre...

Hospitals in England could shed 100,000 jobs. No impact assessment produced. A Wes Streeting recipe for privatisation dressed up as efficiency drive. NHS will be a shell doling out contracts to the private sector. 30% -40% of money will vanish in profits. Money will buy less. Must resist.

Hinkley Point C manager accepted bribes, £11,000 quad bike and £2,000 tickets to a boxing event to funnel contracts to a UK engineering firm. Politicians have been doing this for years - donations, consultancies, gifts Must cleanse politics. Criminalise receiving/giving of political donations.
