Not sure the story about the merchant holds water! But a great view from there, nevertheless. lordbelmontinnorthernireland.blogspot.com/2015/01/glen...

That tower on the Harbour Commissioners building is v similar to one on what is now a nursing home high up on Glemachan Rd, Belmont. Backstory is that the mansion was built by a businessman, the tower enabled him to keep a watch on ships carrying his goods in-out of the port of Belfast.

AUKUS alliance sunk already?

Use this place or fediverse for comments? Quite a few of those I mentioned integrate ActivityPub for comments, maybe ATproto too. The real power of a web!

Free? Self hosted Ghost. Plenty of static site generators: Jekyll, Hugo, Eleventy.

Classic narcississm: claiming that an equal (on the world stage) is being disrespectful. Rather than addressing the issues.

The military long range air defence surveillance radars will provide 250NM range using their PSR chain. It was odd that RTAF confirmed no sighting from their 3 sites (ARSR-4s) but TNI-AU limit use of their systems to preserve availability (T-CSF 2215) so Indonesia’s claim was substantiated.

That’s ASTERIX coding for surveillance radar. ASTERIX is predominantly a civilian radar systems protocol. Civilian PSRs (aka airport surveillance radars need only provide primary surveillance out to maybe 60NM). ⬇️

Is this only available, atm, via satellite broadcast NatGeo? Cannot find any reference to it on Disney+/NatGeo streaming.

That object looks very much like a COPV (composite overwrapped pressure vessel). Very tough! I’d prefer not to have such things raining down from low earth orbit.

Never, since Caligula’s horse, has there been a less qualified holder of high office in government.

US military has for some time avoided use of ADS-B. At best, you might capture mode-S SSR replies. Customising the 1090 receiver config should permit logging of SSR replies.

I may need to borrow that!

You write, ‘*The calculations of aerospace engineer Richard Godfrey and Professor Maskell, an autonomous systems expert, provide the basis for the new search location.*’ That is untrue. This will become evident over coming weeks. What will these two ‘geniuses’ have to say then?

Maybe they’d be better getting themselves in front of Musk & his group of lackies rather than setting up a press opp on some street.

Quite possibly, after catching up on global developments since Oct 27, she’s mighty glad not to have made landfall in Florida.

The American people are OK with all of this?

I really would like to live in a world in which people faced consequences for their shitty actions, rather than being perpetually rewarded for them.

Latency is short in terms of signal propagation but a Mode-S source interrogates the a/c at intervals of ~4secs (rotational speed of antenna). ADS-B squitters are broadcast circa 1sec intervals. Mode-S is typically ‘behind the curve’ when an a/c is turning. Fusing ADS-B & Mode-S should be prefered.

PSR is range & bearing to target only. As a tool in busy airspace it’s practically useless.

Damn it Melon Husk could build a DC Hyperloop & render the helos obsolete! 😂😂😂

Closing DCA & moving traffic to IAD wouldn’t be the end of the world, it may even be possible to sell the site & realise enough cash to uograde IAD rail landside connections to be fast (like H’row Express & Eliz line in London). But, hai, ‘mercuns’ wedded to their conveniences.
comment in response to post
My view is that the airspace design is dangerous. The helo routes are simply dangerously close to the approach paths to DCA. It might mitigate collision risk, to some extent, if helo Route 1 and Route 4 were made ‘one way’, consistent with direction of traffic into/out of DCA.

Oh, has it been confirmed that TCAS did provide an alert to one or both crews? I know there’s a video clip circulating of a radar display showing a ‘CA’ tag but that depicts (or simulates) ATC radar.

I am not the originator of that, very fitting, sobriquet. It may have been Christopher May, who I follow on the fediverse. Using bridgy-fed you may be able to follow fedi-zens here on the ATmosphere😉 zirk.us/@ChrisMayLA6

Those who put themselves up as alternatives to ‘corporate media’ are typically orders of magnitude worse at delivering coherently researched information than corporate media.
comment in response to post
The issue with ‘media’ reporting is that reporting staff has no idea of the nuances of these systems. So on hearing some discussion of corrections to altitude they confuse matters further with any reference to the topic. I hate the term ‘mainstream media’, it’s corporate media.
comment in response to post
The transponder, via ADS-B, Mode-S, Mode-C transmit uncorrected pressure altitude. The actual correction was approx 20ft. Not sure if locally augmented GNSS (WAAS) computes altitude referenced to the local geoid variations. There’s smthg to chase down… later.

Yes, vertical spacing on the rails is same. I found the 10” accessories to often be more expensive than 19” parts hence, if the rack’s hidden in a closet, 19” is adequate. Keystone connectors make life vv easy, TUK has a great range.
