This is why I think killer7 is really special, it's relatively toned down so the atmosphere and MGS2-style writing really shine through. I mean, you're still getting rings from a severed head that talks in emoticons, but somehow it never feels truly over the top

The originals and 3 had an air of menace cause tough as you may be and as intense as the combat got, you're still just a mundane human. The more mythologized Doomguy is, the less tense it feels to play as him, and the more it feels like you're just smacking action figures together

I'm pretty sure there are some mandatory alerts, which are super annoying. Getting all your stuff back and rampaging on them right after feels great, but it's a bit too little too late for how long that section lasts
