Joseph Hayne Rainey (1832-1887) was the first African American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was from South Carolina who served from 1870-1879. Mr. Rainey worked to pass legislation that guaranteed equal protection under the law and funded public schools. #BlackHistoryMonth
