I think this is it. He likes Les Mis and Cats and probably Phantom but it's not about connecting to the characters. He just likes to be dazzled by the costumes and the sets and signing. He doesn't care to think about Nineteenth Century France or what mortality obligates us to do for other people, &c

I'm too young to actually remember those first two but at this point if someone says "early Internet" to me that suggests certainly a time before YouTube and also probably at least before Friendster and Myspace (2003). And if it has graphical web pages I think of that as the later side of "early"
