I am working with ASM to re-launch the Central NY ASM Branch! 🧫🦠 We have funds allocated for us and now just need 25 signatures from ASM members in the geographic region in support of this branch. More info is in the form and also I’ve attached a FAQ sheet. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Celebrating our 2025 graduates alongside Onondaga Lake! (We also saw some πŸ¦… πŸ¦… hunting!!) @micromaresca.bsky.social @hannahgreich.bsky.social

I can't really describe how heartbreaking it is to be a scientist in America, especially an early career one. So many of us did everything right to set ourselves up for success, only to watch our career path crumble.

I am so heartened to this seriously AWESOME #SaveNSF website go up today!!!! Has a take action toolkit with: 1. Press outreach templates 2. Social media toolkit 3. Elected official outreach 4. Talking points Check it out and share widely!!!! Likely more to come. www.savensf.com

Looking ahead to an unpaid summer that I planned to write 3 NSF grants (2 pending) as my lab runs out of startup funding. Hearing about other dramatic cuts at NIH where I have a grant pending. USDA barely has any grant instructions up. And struggling to not just say β€œwhat’s the point” 😞 #NewPI

You want to hear what "return on investment" means in relation to NSF funding? I know you do...

ATTENTION: NSF GRANT RECIPIENTS We received a heads up from a trusted source that you should proactively download/print/screen shot any documentation on research.gov pertaining to your NSF awards, both those that are current and any that have closed in the last 5-6 years. 1/n

Are there resources circulating about how to proceed if a #NSF grant is terminated? Thought I saw stuff the other day… Posting on behalf of a colleague who had a #NSF grant axed yesterday.

On behalf of the Northeast Algal Society (NEAS): NEAS 2025 registration and abstract submission closes on March 5th! Please register and submit your abstract at northeastalgae.org/future_ac.php - we also have an online option if you cannot make it in person.

Join us! Science Homecoming helps scientists reconnect with communities by writing about the importance of science funding in their hometown newspapers. We’ve mapped every small newspaper in the U.S. and provide resources to get you started. Help science get back home πŸ§ͺπŸ”¬πŸ§¬ 🏠 sciencehomecoming.com

Microbe Girlie Funland fairies (@hannahgreich.bsky.social) delivered our hoodies today!!

Worst week for science EVER. Sunday: ASM scrubs DEI mentions from website. Tue: NASA scrubs DEI from website; ICE arrests a student on campus; NSF plans to cut staff; USAID halted. Wed: HHMI kills diversity program; NIH trashes applications for diversity F grants. Fri: NIH cuts indirects.

Over 2.5 billion years ago, trillions of tiny Cyanobacteria spent hundreds of millions of years creating an oxygen-rich atmosphere on Earth. Take a deep breath. How are you using your oxygen today? Be present. Give freely. Care for others. Make your ancient microbial cousins proud. Exhale. Repeat.

A is for algae, artistic and attractive. The letter A from my new Microbial Alphabet series. Pictured are a few examples of different types of algae including desmids, cyanobacteria, green algae, golden algae, and seaweed.

The entire archive of CDC datasets can be found here. HUGE shoutout to data archivists- this work is important πŸ‘πŸ™ŒπŸ» archive.org/details/2025...

The US gained its international leadership in science (& economic benefits of that leadership) starting in the 1930s when Nazi germany drove away its leading scientists. The US can lose that leadership in much the same way, which will take many years to recover from. Oppose RFK Save NIH/NSF/CDC

Tangentially related, but when you do a search on Google, you can end your search request with β€œ-ai” and no AI results will come up, saving the earth water and you the headache of having to see unhelpful results.

Another year, another lecture on extremophiles coming up. What is your favorite extremophile and why? Bonus points if a relevant study has been published in the past year. (I did this last year and it was full of fun surprises, so let's try again). Please repost! #microsky

Making one more final push for nominations for our emerging model organism final project! We've got plenty of euks but are looking for more prokaryote representation! The weirder the better! Accompanying papers welcome too 🧫🦠 Paging #BacteriaSky #ArchaeaSky #ProkaryoteSky (1/N)

Classes start in a week (ah!) so re-sharing this! Still soliciting suggestions for emerging model organisms for cell bio. "Model" can be interpreted broadly but looking for taxa that: 1) have an active research community 2) some combo of a genome, life cycle, culture. #CellSky #AcademicSky

Real science: 1. Is not correlated with the amount of funding 2. Progresses slowly, usually taking many years 3. Leads to more questions than it answers 4. Advances when we disengage & in improvisational discussions 5. Is too important a thing to be done in a non-playful way

I’m Hannah! I a proud member of the #NeurodiverseSquad & #DisabledInSTEM. I have a learning disability, anxiety & ADHD. I recently started as an Asst Prof @sunyesf.bsky.social! I’m an environmental biologist who studies microalgal symbiosis in marine & (now) freshwater systems πŸͺΈπŸ§½πŸ§«πŸ§ͺπŸ§¬πŸ”¬πŸŒŠπŸ€ΏπŸ–₯️

Hi, #AcademiaSky! I'm a #newPI gearing up to teach a mid-level #CellBio course in spring 25. I'm implementing a final project where students work in small groups to make a poster on an emerging model organism in cell bio. Please suggest potential taxa! Bonus points if you include a paper! (1/N)

go.bsky.app/CK1kS44 I have created an Upstate NY microbiology starter pack. Please let me know who else I should add!

Wild & weird. Defs stashing away for my #CellBio course next semester!
