Given the Dodik news, it's wroth reminding that the very existence of Republika Srpska could have been averted even in 1994-95, but the EU and US made an active choice to continue to push for its continued existence as an entity within an independent Bosnia Herzegovina. 1/🧵:

Remember the whole stink that was raised when Bernie suggested that the owner of the Post was negatively influencing their coverage of him?

At this point you have to wonder what will be left of American democracy in time for this electoral backlash in… 2 years.

Bild is also reporting that preparations are ongoing in Italy for a possible withdrawal of US troops from Kosovo.

OP from an Astrophysics Ph.D., apparently. About as insightful as if I started lecturing on the solar system.

Shocking that any American would associate w/ a political extremist, secessionist, & Bosnian Genocide denier like Milorad Dodik. Moreover, given that Dodik is under both US & UK sanctions, Giuliani being (presumably) flown out to Bosnia by Dodik is also legally questionable.

What a surreal encapsulation of anti-Palestinian racism. A Jewish and pro-Israel man shoots and injures 2 people because he thinks they're Palestinian. They're actually Israeli. The two victims respond by assuming the shooter was Palestinian and an antisemite, with one posting "death to Arabs."

i am 100% of the belief that simply forcing take-writers to answer the question "who specifically said this and why are they significant" would result in substantially fewer bad takes circulating in the world

Who doesn't love a small word that packs meaning? The Turkish interjection "öf"—which inspired the BCMS "uf"—is one of these beloved words. "Öf" when deeply sad, öf when shameful, öf when disgusted, öf when everything feels precarious. Öf öf öf. Uf uf uf.

Pete Marocco, right now the most important person at the State Department, "has it in for Bosnia." Just stop for a minute and think about what that means. www.propublica.org/article/usai...

I finished @vukusiciva.bsky.social new book documenting the systems of organization, plausible deniability and patterns of violence perpetrated by Serbian Paramilitaries in the 1990s. This is a chilling but extremely important and relevant read in 2025, beyond just the dissolution of Yugoslavia.

There’s long been a thread among the far right / wht. supremacists of admiring the Serb ethno-nationalist project and buying into its clash of civilizations framing: Breivik, the NZ shooter, the “ironic” remove kebab memes. Now those fringe racists and internet trolls run the U.S. executive branch.

He met with an ethnosupremacist two decades after the Bosnian genocide. 7 years later Trump tasked him with dismantling USAID. In one way or another it almost always goes back to them hating Bosnians and/or Palestinians

Deeply alarming revelations about links between a senior Trump admin official and Bosnian Serb secessionist strongman and genocide triumphalist Milorad Dodik: “He had it in for Bosnia…and I didn’t know why at the time.” www.propublica.org/article/usai...

I swear this Vampire Weekend song has part of the melody from Hari Mata Hari's "Sam pao sam."

For anyone else wondering, DOGE is pronounced “Dodgy.”

Naše gore list 🫠 “A 25-year-old DOGE operative named Marko Elez in fact has admin privileges on these critical systems, which directly control and pay out roughly 95% of payments made by the U.S. government.” talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/musk-...

“Ethnicity being treated as more important than ability” — headline from one of Milosevic’s 1980s newspapers or Trumpist 2020s media?

If you have German and need to take your mind of Trumplandia, here's a very cool long feature on Gorizia/Nova Gorica, a town once divided between Italy and Yugoslavia (now Slovenia)--its Cold War-era life and the current efforts to build a shared memory. www.srf.ch/audio/intern...

"To...protect its interests, Washington must urgently reset its failed policies of appeasement toward local strongmen, relying instead on proven allies." Smart analysis from @harunb.bsky.social & A. Begic of USABiH org on what new US admin can do in BiH & region. balkaninsight.com/2025/01/21/u...

Amadou N'Diaye from Saint-Louis in Senegal at 40 years of age in 1936. He was injured in a shell explosion at Monastir in Bosnia on June 2nd 1917. His right foot was amputated. He was one of 1000s of West and North African soldiers who fought in the Balkans.

I asked my 2-year-old what her favorite animal is and she said me.

The most brutal ratio I’ve seen here so far.

Russia “invades” and “occupies” Ukraine, Israel “militarily advances ” into a “Syrian buffer zone”

Is everything from Heritage this amateurish or is this email exceptionally bad?

I've just received the text of an email sent today by the Heritage Foundation defending an ongoing blockade by Kremlin associate Dragan Covic preventing decoupling of BiH frm Russian gas dependency. I've seen a lot of political spin in my time but this is a literal inversion of reality. Some pts:

My latest piece: Forever is over - on the fall of Bashar Al-Assad www.hauntologies.net/p/forever-is...

A narrative of the Syrian revolution in under seven days. As Hemingway said, ‘Slowly at first, and then all at once’ #FallOfAssad #r4today #AlJolani #Syria #Damascus @lbc.co.uk @ozkaterji.bsky.social

I'm seeing a younger generation of Syrian activists, recently politicized over Gaza, confused as to why some of the commentators they follow have such bad takes on Syria. Good time to re-share: leilashami.wordpress.com/2018/04/14/t...

PSA: There are 20 or so episodes of The Fire These Times @thepodcast.bsky.social on Syria. Topics range from war crimes denial, the forcibly disappeared, Assad's destruction of Yarmouk Palestinian camp, class analysis, prison literature, and more. Here they are from oldest to newest. 🧵

I never put much faith in the legal drama over Trump because I was focused on the political contest. That said, it’s absolutely ridiculous that it apparently took all of 4 years for the case against a blatantly obvious attempt to overturn election results to get absolutely nowhere.

Today was the day Bluesky finally became president.

A Grand Theory of mine is that we are suffering from the same sickness that spun Yugoslavia out of control (media market segmentation) Of course the two patients (US and SFRY) are rather different, and so the course of the disease is rather different, but it's the same disease

Your Balkan term of the day is “sendvičar”: a person who engages in political protest or activism for lowly remuneration, i.e. a sandwich. Typically older, lower-educated, willing to be bused long distances for said sandwich. Understood to sell their votes for token sums, i.e. 25€.

I feel like the Palestine exception is considerable for “decolonial” white westerners studying Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Ukraine esp. Be serious, people

It's come a long way, but this place just won't feel complete until I see @a-d-n.bsky.social regularly roasting Germany.

DPC, concerned by the High Representative's reported arguments in favor of a partial revision of the Kovacevic decision by the European Court of Human Rights in his submission to the Court, worked with Axiom Advocates (Edinburgh) to submit...

Bosnian Blue Sky Starter Pack?

From exactly one year ago today, resharing since it’s completely spot-on still

I honestly don’t think of it as guilt. Many Germans had a comfortable post-Holocaust in discourse around which they centered themselves. They made the Holocaust about them, not about Jews. Now that Jews are calling them out they cannot handle it.
