If this UK parliament inquiry really lifts the lid on #AUKUS it won't be a pretty sight. UK sub programs are a shambles. SSN-AUKUS won't be developed in time. We need our own inquiry to hold Defence to account for its biggest cockup ever. #auspol

The gas industry's repeated fib about a gas 'shortage' crisis has been busted by...Peter Dutton? We've got the footage, @richarddenniss.bsky.social takes a look and explains how this is a really significant moment in the debate. 👇

Our PBS is a national treasure. Our research shows the prices Australians would pay if the US had its way and dismantled our Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. Heart disease/cholesterol medicine: $25 v $968 Depression medicine: $32 v $2,244 Female contraception: $28 v $621

Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor was asked today at the Press Club about the low numbers of women preselected for Liberal seats. 10 years ago the party set a target: 50% of its parliamentarians to be women by 2025. They will not meet the target.

If they moved the salmon farms out of Macquarie harbour to save the suffocating Maugean skate, either to onshore tanks or further in the ocean, what jobs will be lost? If anything, jobs will be CREATED in making the industry more sustainable. It's just their profits that will take a hit.

Labor bending over backwards for a foreign-owned salmon industry that hasn't paid tax in 3 years has got to be one of the biggest self-owns of this Parliament. Tasmanians are PISSED ⤵️

No, a government's budget is not like a household budget. So good to hear @amyremeikis.bsky.social and @mattgrudnoff.bsky.social explain at Politics in the Pub!

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young just pulled out a very large dead salmon in the Senate in a protest over the environmental laws and salmon farming 🐟

Well, I'm not eating Tasmanian salmon again. @andrewwilkiemp.bsky.social can hardly believe what the government is doing to create environmental loopholes for the rotten salmon industry, and for good reason. Watch this 👇

"In Tasmania, fish that have died from rickettsia bacteria in this appalling die off...are being processed for human consumption." @andrewwilkiemp.bsky.social reveals what's going on in the salmon farms. Our research shows 7 in 10 Tasmanians want salmon farms OUT of inshore waters. #auspol

The Trump administration leaks war plans by adding a journalist to a signal chat and the Albanese Government INCREASES funding to AUKUS by another $6 billion on the same day. You couldn't make it up.

Researchers have found that ChatGPT "power users," or those who use it the most and at the longest durations, are becoming dependent upon — or even addicted to — the chatbot. Really interesting story, but unsurprising for those that have been thinking about this a lot.

It should be obvious by now that Netanyahu won't stop until every Palestinian in #Gaza (and perhaps the West Bank) has been murdered, maimed or expelled. He wants it all. Governments like ours should cut off all military equipment, diplomatic support and other relations until the genocide ends.

It's funny* how when it comes to the prospect of doing literally anything to materially improve people's lives, it's always "oh we have big plans for after the next election", but ruinous environmental law changes or repressive "national security" legislation can always be rushed through with haste

One thing that I noticed when I was in Paris was how many people were jogging, walking, cycling through the city. That is, actually using public spaces and sidewalks and roads for leisure. Building cities for people, not for cars is a vote-winner:

Absolute textbook C3 from Albo today

Nice of Tanya to wear her salmon pink so proudly today.

"The right of citizens with standing to challenge their governments in court is a fundamental pillar of a robust democracy." "We must not set this principle aside simply to provide a drowning Prime Minister with a headline and a stoush." What a line from the Member for Grayndler, Anthony Albanese.

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.” “Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath Some costs aren’t costs.

"I just want to see Australia autonomous. I've never understood why Australia as a country hasn't taken a stand in the world." This audience member from #ABCQandA makes some great points.

Thanks guys this is really cute but can you stop logging native forests and tax the gas industry

It's always the ones you least expect.

Israel is starving 2.4 million people. Bombing, murdering children. Yes Peter Dutton said today that if he became PM, "Israel will be able to count on our support" To "support" this genocidal regime in any capacity is disgraceful. It would bring shame on us all. Image @theslowfactory.bsky.social

For the record, Joe Hockey is a defence lobbyist who stands to make millions from defence contracts with the US and other allies. To just describe him in interviews as a former US ambassador and not his CURRENT vested interest role is not just irresponsible, it's lying.

Oh wow, a Free trade Agreement with Israel! Amazing!! Game changer!!! Free trade with... *checks notes* ...the country that buys 0.04% of our merchandise exports and where we export less than we do to Iran, Yemen, Kuwait, Iceland...

AEMO's report shows two key things: 1. Australia has an abundance of gas. Most of it is exported. 2. Demand for gas is plummeting. No wonder Big Gas is kicking up a stink. The real question is, will our Governments keep throwing favours at an industry that is rapidly becoming obsolete? #auspol

Sign this, not asking, demanding. Fuck the salmon off! Save the Maugean Skate.

Suburban sprawl is high on the list of the US' great blunders, and Australia has followed. Is it any wonder we have an epidemic of loneliness when our homes pull us apart, rather than bringing us together? Thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful piece from Alexander Hurst.

Remember, the reason we got AUKUS because *Boris Johnson* wanted to "punish" Macron. According to his memoir, he persuaded Scott Morrison to dump our French submarine deal in favour of AUKUS, as "revenge". Ditching AUKUS is a perfect opportunity for a PM who wants another term to show leadership.

"Australia faces a “colossal surrender of sovereignty” if promised US nuclear-powered submarines do not arrive under Australian control, former foreign affairs minister Bob Carr has said, arguing the US is “utterly not a reliable ally” to Australia." Too right Bob. Great piece from Ben Doherty ⤵️

Was a looming gas crisis "averted", or was the 'crisis' totally overblown by gas companies who wanted an excuse to open more gas fields? 🤔

Australians get a pittance from the huge corporations that extract and sell our gas. WA missed out on at least $9.6 billion in revenue from not charging royalties on gas over the last four years. And now Dutton wants to fast-track approval for 50 more years of this rort. 🤔

Leadership is possible 👇

I know that getting the facts right has never been much of a concern for the gas lobby but surely they can at least spell-check their propaganda ads before they publish them 🧐

Dutton knows we'll never build nuclear power. He's pushed the issue because it lets him talk about climate without mentioning coal & gas. A great political strategy - so many lefties and media took the bait. Watch the whole thing dissipate into nothingness as soon as it stops being useful.

Australia doesn’t have a gas "shortage" crisis. It has an integrity crisis. This week AEMO will release its annual Gas Statement of Opportunities. Before the onslaught of headlines of "catastrophic gas shortages", let's get a few things straight. 🧵 (1/5) #auspol #climate

The Coalition's 'speed limit' on tax idea is completely arbitrary & completely nonsensical. As Richard & Matt explained last time the Coalition were excited about this idea, it's good to have a flexible tax system that collects more when the economy booms, not be limited by made-up tax caps.

"If houses were unaffordable, no one would be buying them." – Joe Hockey, 2015. Unfortunately a banger line from Joe. No truth or facts required, just pure vibes. New video from me @australiainstitute.org.au featuring @grogsgamut.bsky.social

With his tariffs, Trump has shown just how much he values Australia's 'friendship'. Albanese should show strength and quit the AUKUS submarine deal, before Trump pulls the rug himself. We stand nothing to gain and everything to lose from remaining tied to AUKUS. #auspol

Just checking in on the news...apparently being rich is nice?!

In the crypto boon of 2020-2021, Elon Musk learnt that he could tweet about Dogecoin and pump up the price. It was easy for him to manipulate, possibly for enormous profit. I wonder if he passed on a few tips to Trump, creating their own personal Trump and Dump scheme.
