Really looking forward to this!

As a writer, hearing constructive criticism and taking it on board can be heartbreaking, but it is a necessary part of the job and it usually makes us even better writers.

There's just one week to go until I interview @sirbenfro.bsky.social at the Cromarty Crime and Thrillers Weekend! I've never been to Cromarty before, so I'm excited to get up there and see what it's all about! If you see me mooching around, please do come and say hello – I'd love to have a chat! 😊

Since I know how invested in spinach-gate you all are, I thought I’d share my lunch with you 😆 I present to you, a cheesy chicken and spinach pesto wrap 😋

I've made a decent start with 2,728 words this afternoon 🤓

I’ve been ignoring my WIP for too long and now I have 25 days to write around 30,000 words 😬 Time to get stuck in!

This is episode three of “I Accidentally Bought too Much Spinach and Now I Need to Use it Up” 😂 Today we have Spinach Pesto, made using whatever vaguely pesto-like ingredients I had in the cupboard. (Spinach, pumpkin seeds, nutritional yeast, garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper.)

Welcome to Episode 2 of the series where I try to use up excess spinach I bought 🤦🏻‍♀️ This morning I have a cottage cheese duck egg omelette with spinach, mozzarella and chicken slices. This is pretty good, but the spinach has quite an iron-like taste that I don’t love. I’d give it a 7/10 😄

My first recipe as I endeavour to use an extra bag of spinach I bought by mistake is Spanakopita Biscuits 😁 Absolutely delicious and I reckon I might use a couple as sandwiches for lunch tomorrow 😋

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but if you’re reading a book you’re not enjoying this is your sign to put it down and pick up something else instead. Life is too short to read books you’re not enjoying!

The beauty of checking for, and removing, these words from our manuscripts is, that when we do use them, it’s with purpose, and they have the intended and necessary impact.

Just call me super-sub! Due to illness, I have been asked to interview @sirbenfro.bsky.social at Cromarty Arts Trust Crime & Thrillers weekend at the beginning of May, and I am extremely excited! tinyurl.com/4sxxv6vt

Anyone got any good spinach recipes?! I've managed to end up with two big bags of baby spinach 🙈

It seems many of you writers felt seen when I talked about crutch words, so I thought I'd share the list of words I check for on every edit I carry out. Where these words are used for emphasis, removing them will – usually – tighten up your prose & make for a more flowing read 🤓

✨ CRUTCH WORDS AND PHRASES ✨ It's no secret that most writers have 'crutch' words and phrases. That is words and/or phrases that they fall back on throughout their manuscript. As editors, it's our job to weed them out and suggest alternatives. 🧵

Something I find writers get confused about it when to capitalise terms of address and titles, and when they should take a lowercase. When words like mum, dad and doctor are used as proper noun, ie in place of a name, they should be capitalised. When used generally they should take a lower case.

If you're a new writer – or even if you're not! – it can be difficult to know what kind of edit your book needs. I've created this handy guide to help explain some common types of book editing. If you're still not sure what stage you're at, it's okay to ask! We all had to start learning sometime 🥰

Happy Publication Day @evesmithauthor.bsky.social 🥳 You’re keeping me company on my way to London 😊

There are some CRACKING books being published today! I only wish I had to the time to read them all. I'll have to make do with sharing my thoughts on three of my favourite authors' books @whusseyauthor.bsky.social @tariqashkanani.bsky.social and @robertrutherford.bsky.social tinyurl.com/4dksj3eb

If you are looking for an independent and honest assessment of your book, my manuscript review service could be what you're looking for! Feel free to DM or get in touch via my website tinyurl.com/yz3tu3yc

Mine too.

Meta and LibGen stole my books and they should not be allowed to get away with it. I call up on our government to protect the work of creatives and ensure we are fairly paid for our work.

I was researching horror books before I went to bed last night. Can you imagine the state of my sheets when I was woken up in the middle of the night by a fox screaming?!

Just home from a mammoth Edinburgh trip signing copies of #TheRestIsDeath and anything else I can get my hands on. All the Waterstones branches have signed copies now, as does Blackwells on South Bridge.

Today is #TransDayofVisibility, so it's a great moment to remind you about the Crime Writers for Trans Rights auction! Honored to be a part of this with so many friends. Please consider bidding on some really cool items, all benefiting the Transgender Law Center! www.32auctions.com/writers4tran...
