@helenbarnard.bsky.social highlights growing challenge of deep poverty. Two in three of the food parcels they deliver are to families with children. Recent work by @trusselluk.bsky.social and WPI Economics finds there as significant fiscal benefits of tackling child poverty.

The childcare market is broken says @helenbarnard.bsky.social The state invests a significant amount, and it is hugely expensive for parents. Yet it is too often inflexible and poor quality, with an underpaid workforce.

... These cuts will utterly undermine this goal. Slashing support damages people’s health & reduces their ability to engage in training and work. And driving up hardship will drive up costs in public services like the NHS. The government has to think again. 4/4

If it pushes through these ill-considered & cruel cuts, it won't keep this promise - instead, they risk leaving behind a legacy of rising poverty and hunger. We support reforming employment support & helping more people into work, where health & accessible jobs allow. But...3/4

Comes just after Trussell stats showed nearly 3 million emergency food parcels were provided last year, 1 every 11 seconds. Majority already go to disabled families. This government was elected on a promise of change & ending the need for food banks. 2/4

Holding up a picture of a woman in a hijab whilst calling for a burka ban doesn’t exactly build credibility.

- Decoupling of pro-independence voters from SNP continues. - Reform proved a serious force in Scotland. - Conservatives collapsed, assume votes went mainly to Reform. But doesn't explain Reform vote share so more analysis to come on where rest of their votes came from. 3/3

...despite winning still down from 2021 (which was dismal). SNP slightly underperformed. - Doesn't suggest Labour on course to win 2026 election. - But SNP may end up a v minority government. - Combined pro-independence vote may be a minority in the next Parliament. 2/3

Outrageous. Once you’ve bought a politician he should stay bought! That’s just good manners.

I really agree. You have to give credit for whatever you can. Most of the time there are people in government fighting for what you're campaigning for. If they get something but gov gets no credit & all you do is shout at them, you've massively undermined their ability to push for further progress.

Funding comes from the UK government for England, it's not funded by schools. No indication yet on how it relates to the overall Dept for Education budget - if it's in addition or found from within it.

Funding comes from UK government for England, devolved governments in rest of the UK.

Especially intense for some civil servants. Working on a policy they know will be damaging/won't work. Even more when they personally will be hurt by it, but still have to deliver for the minister. Real leadership challenge to bring teams through that dissonance, deliver whilst not breaking people.

Which is a particularly annoying version of 'you can pay for mahoosive spending commitments by hitting this tiny group of people you don't like'!
