Thanks for coming, Kirsty! So much to discuss on the changes underway in social media land. It was great to hear from @madlinsudn.bsky.social and @socialaf.bsky.social - lots of interesting comments in the chat too.

On the plus side, I’ve managed a really interesting pitch meeting and delivered an hour of LinkedIn training.
So perhaps all is not lost.

I’d focus on blogs that answer your client’s most pressing FAQs.
(In theory. In practice I write a lot more for clients than for Seashell)

I started making a list of people who have Charity starter packs - that felt like a sort of workaround. Not ideal though!

I was going for tangible, easy to action and directly linked to charitable aims.
It’s not the whole picture, by all means.

I’m curious too. I hope it isn’t adding too much to the to-do lists of social media managers who are already stretched!

We all get caught up in platform metrics, like follower numbers, as our source of data.
However we have to remind ourselves that it’s not how many accounts we’re talking to, but who we’re taking to on social media that really matters.

I spoke to a client last week who felt really exasperated at the thought of starting all over again on BlueSky after spending years growing an audience for the organisation she leads on Twitter/X.

An ethical question I would prioritise asking is whether it is safe for the community you serve on X.
Should you encourage your audiences to interact with you somewhere that they are at risk of discrimination and abuse without recourse?

My ten cents?
Nonprofits often use Twitter/X to reach policymakers, journalists, funders and other organisations working on the same issue.
Look through your stakeholder influence map and see who has stayed on X, left X, set up on BlueSky etc and adjust your map and comms strategy.

If you work for a charity and are thinking through the decision-making process, the brilliant CharityComms collaborated with the equally brilliant @terezalitsa.bsky.social to create a checklist to help you decide:

It’s definitely worth reserving your domain-linked handle event if you don’t plan to use it straight away (or ever) according to @dantelicona.com (who knows his stuff!)

BlueSky is ‘decentralised'
This is a bit like the internet going back to its roots with more self-governance, ownership of data and independence from any central authority.

It’s an interesting one for sure.
She says I’m referring to things (like clothes that need repairing) as holy instead of holey 😂

Me too.
Although I’ve read a few good pieces about low birth rates, just not about the knock-on infrastructure effects.
